What does one ask a mentor one on one?
Hi All RR experts,
My 1st RR here. So I have my songs, etc, but I am not sure what to ask a mentor? Are they expecting a certain protocol of questions or session? Do you have them listen to a tune and ask critique? Or where they think the piece could be useful? And does one only play one song?
Also, where are lyric sheets needed? DO I need lyric sheets for all my tunes?
Thank you and loo forward to meeting you!

Hey Linda!
What I've done in the past...
Hand the Mentor your Song List(on paper) with descriptors for each tune
Ask if there is anything specific they are looking for right now
Give them a chance to tell you
Play them something that might fit the bill
Then direct them to listen to your most marketable tunes
I've had mentors listen to several tunes each time (anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 seconds each, longer on something they liked)

Hi Linda,
As a mentor I'm most interested in how I can help you on your path.
Because the sessions are short, have your elevator speech ready
Who you are
What you are trying to do with your music. Label' or TV Film
What track do you want heard. And why
Things I listen for
Production
Composition
Performance
Marketability
If you are bringing a cd, good idea to have a back up on your phone. Sometimes the cd machines decide not to work!
Be sure all your contact info is on your cd, & business cards!
Good luck! You are going to have a great time,
Bob

Thanks Bob!
I probably went a little overboard on the "pitch - pitch - pitch"
It is a mentorship after all (I forgot)
You are a good man
Keep in mind that ML put out the memo to have your mentor music not on a cd but on an electronical device instead!

Re: What does one ask a mentor one on one?
Thank you very much both of you! I have a lot of authentic excellent quality vintage recordings. I have been signed to a library who specializes in this. I am hoping there is a place for them in other libraries and to be able to submit new and contemporary music as well.
I guess that will be my spiel..I guess all in all the music speaks for itself.
Hope to meet both of you!
Best,
Linda C

This was corrected. The mentors will have boombox CD players so you bring your music on CD as well as device. I had contacted Taxi because people were confused (since CDs were the norm every year) and they corrected the PDF.cassmcentee wrote:Keep in mind that ML put out the memo to have your mentor music not on a cd but on an electronical device instead!
Bring your music on CD or mobile device. Mentors will have their own headphones.
CYA soon!
Casey
PS But Bob Mete makes an excellent point. Have a backup on your device in case of technical glitch with your CD or their player. Stuff happens!

Re: What does one ask a mentor one on one?
Hi Linda,
Your questions may vary depending on the Mentor you signup with. Recently, TAXI has provided a very helpful worksheet to select which mentor you might want to pair up with. It's on the site, but here's the link as well:
https://www.taxi.com/PDF/2017/2017_ment ... k_view.pdf
If you want the first or second mentor of your choice, get to the registration area in the lobby as early as possible. The line starts early Thursday morning - sometimes I'll arrive by 8am and the line for the 5:30pm registration is already vastly long! It may sound funny, but this is usually one of the most fun aspects of the rally - waiting in line, conversing with other TAXI members, getting to meet new friends and possible new collaboraters.
Good luck, and see ya there!
