What makes a good hook?

Post by Gillihan » Sun Jul 23, 2023 2:17 pm

I would like everyone's perspective on this... if possible.
We all know there are different kinds of hooks. The repeat the same word over and over in the chorus.. the repetitive kind. the hook said at the end of each ending line of the verse. alternating the hook line and various lines in the chorus. but what is your favorite hook style and why? looking for new insight on creating . Maybe we can bounce some new ideas around in here. GBYA! :D :ugeek:

Favorite? ...the musical hook :)
Graham (UK). Still composing a little faster than decomposing, and 100% HI.

A good hook is something that the music journalists and snobs loves to hate ;)

It's one of those "you know it when you hear it things". In MOST cases, it's the hook lyric line (usu. the contains the title) repeated at the beginning or end of the chorus with a musical phrase. When you can't get it out of your head, it works. For example, "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus. It's hard not to keep hearing "I can buy myself flowers" in your head.

Don't make me go listen to the song to hear what you're talking about. I'd be... er... 'hooked'

Well there is that "borrowing" thing. Actually "Flowers" is totally stolen from Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man". :D
