Mmm yes. Too true.Casey H wrote:Paraphrasing and I'm not sure who said it or said it first...
Don't write what you want to say. Write what other people want to hear!

Aw that's lovely Vikki. What a special memory. <3hummingbird wrote:I think it impossible to attribute any of my success to ONE thing said by one person. However, I will say this one thing still is remembered by me, and resonates with me, in both sorrow and joy. Sorrow because he's gone, and joy because he knew me so well that he would never ever ask me to give up music for any reason. My partner, Mark, when I was fallow and full of doubts and had stopped composing, or anytime I let things slide: "Why aren't you writing?" <3

Wow! I'm a lucky man, but... it makes sense.

Haha! That's a good one... never heard that before!PhilRey wrote:Never forget to play! (mainly when the guy with the baton says "1-2-3-4.." )
That's honestly one of the best advice I've received, and that I have pleasure to remind to myself.. often !

Yesss. love that. Same.ernstinen wrote:Be emotionally honest. Every time that I am, it works. Every time that I'm not (i.e.writing for what I think OTHER people want to hear) it sucks.
There's an old story that Dylan influenced Lennon's "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," writing honestly from his heart. But I was just listening to a Lennon song from easily 2 years earlier, "There Is A Place," and he was already doing that!... I'm not sure when Brian Wilson wrote "In My Room," but I'll bet that Lennon beat him to the "opening of the heart" thing.
It may not get you a huge hit, but it sure will be a turning point in your songwriting career. Honesty.

Yeah seems to be the common theme! I like that.songmaster wrote:I'll go with the " Emotion " thing, especially in TV and film. One artist said it took him his whole life to learn how to paint like a child. I think it's like that

Haha yep! Man I used to cling to that second rule for the longest time... definitely valuable adviceSteveBaruah wrote:Good question! I think the one that has helped me the most so far is "Stick to one thought".
But that doesn't sound so cool, so I'll throw in "Learn all of the rules, then learn how to break them."
