Re: What's the ONE thing?
Thanks for this post Anna. i enjoyed reading the prior comments, some good stuff there.
I really like lyrics. So, I enjoyed Ralph Murphy's advice - I paraphrase - the first line of your song had better be a lyric that no one else could write.
I took that to mean that being universal and still being unique is the goal.

Write till your hands hurt,
Sing till your lungs hurt,
Act till you're William Hurt.

Re: What's the ONE thing?
do the listeners care about the songwriters/artists feelings anymore? we all just wanna be entertained nowadays don't we?
i'd rather suggest you make a video to your tracks that can go viral. after you've written a hit song of course
anyway, i remember madonna said something that stuck with me when asked what her nr. one advice would be for people who wants to make it big: surround yourself with brilliant people. easy for her to say of course, but when you think back on her career, she's always been smart, making the right choices, working with the right people. and i think making the right choices is far more important than raw talent. in anything.

Just one thing? Hmm...
"They are songs, not children. Let go and move on." (sort of a variation of write, submit, forget, repeat)
"At some point you have to call a project done. Don't get stuck in a paralysis by analysis mode. It's either good enough, or it's not and needs to be shelved."
"If you don't have the passion to do the hard work needed to succeed, find something else where you do have the passion."
And something I've told many music students: "If you are practicing and it sounds good, you are not really practicing, you are just playing. Practice should sound bad."

Re: What's the ONE thing?
Just caught up with this great thread... thank you Anna for starting it !
For me, there are 3 things I have been told and never forget, and adhere too religiously. Remember, I'm a lyricist, so these are from that point of view.
1. Never ever ever give up
2. Feel the emotion as you write. In other words, be a great actor and truly empathise with the lyrics, then the emotion will flow out, because you are IN it, not outside looking in.
3. Rewrite, rewrite and rewrite... and leave decent gaps in between them. We cant always do this with tight deadlines I know, but the rest of the time I do this.
