Which collection societies do I need to join?

Post by Peterg » Wed Feb 03, 2021 1:45 am

Hi,
I have signed up to PRS in the UK. Do I need to join similar societies in the US or elsewhere? Or is PRS affiliated with these societies?
There is a current listing that says: Quoting the Company: “Only artists/writers affiliated with ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, KODA, SACEM, APRA-AMCOS are eligible to submit their music for this opportunity.”
Does that mean just being a member of PRS is not enough?

THanks

Peter

From what I gathered, one may be a member of multiple PROs as long as each membership covers only certain territories, i.e. PRS for UK, Europe, Asia, and BMI for America

Thanks Marco, still not sure if I need to join BMI or if PRS collect through them on my behalf

Pleasure! Yes, PRS will get you your royalties from BMI, and any other collection society, you will have to wait longer, just

THanks Marco, I've waited about 40 years, so a few more won't make much difference!

Cheers

PRS have agreements with all the other PRO's so they can collect on your behalf...however that doesn't mean you can't join another PRO in a different territory as well as or instead of.

If you are signing music with mostly US libraries then you will not have to wait the extra 9-12 months it would take for those royalties to filter through via PRS if you join ASCAP or BMI
