Which direction should I go?

Post by soundprizm » Thu Aug 05, 2010 6:45 am

What's up my fellow peers!! I have a song up as a little taste of a direction I'm trying to go in with my music. Judging from what you hear, is it something I should pursue? I gotta make up my mind if I should try to put a band together, write and front it... or submit these tunes I come up with to Taxi and see what happens? Or what? I just don't know if my voice is up to par with what's on the radio. Should I just songwrite, etc.? Any feedback I can get will help me make that decision! I'm a drummer in a band now (http://www.reverbnation.com/sikfiction if you're interested), and have another project that may be going on as well, so I have a few options to work with... probably too many options! ;)

Here's the link http://www.reverbnation.com/lucidsonance It's not a polished version, just "demo" quality...

Thanks in advance! :D

Hey there - Backing tracks sound great! I wasn't convinced by the vocals or the short guitar solo. If you're interested in a lyric critique you should post the lyrics with your thread. Good luck! eo.

Thanks for the reply eo! I didn't think about the lyrics... Here they are:

Verse 1 -
Lies
All I hear are lies
Hiding the truth
Breaking me down
I'm fed up, I won't wear this disguise

Pre-Chorus -
I can't hold on
Any longer
No

Verse 2 -
Believe what you want
I can't stop myself
I know what you want from me, but I just can't let it go

Pre-Chorus - Repeat

Chorus -
Take it, break it, tear it apart
I can see it means nothing to you now
I can't see my way from here
Take it
Break it
Tear it apart

Verse - Guitar Solo

Pre-Chorus - Repeat

Break -
Oh Darlin'
I'm out of touch now
It's too late
Oh Darlin'
It's too late

Chorus - Repeat

Outro - Guitar Solo

Well soundprizm, I listened to your song first, and it reminded me of Roger Daltry and The Who. I liked this much better than the sikfiction stuff which sounded a little like Black Sabbath, except for the lead vocal, it sounded too much screaming. I much prefer the Roger Daltry voice over the screamer, so that is the direction I like best. I don't think I can answer whether the demo version is on par with a produced radio version, if it was produced well, I would say yes, if that is what you're asking. The lyrics are vague to me, I'm not sure what is really going on, I think if the lyrics had more conviction your singing would be more convincing, Roger!

Thanks for the reply Len! Much obliged... So far, it's leaning towards Taxi! I figure doing 2 more songs, joining, then seeing where it goes! :) ...But yeah, you answered my question, I think you can pretty much tell if a song/band would do well if produced/recorded professionally. As for the lyrics, I try to keep 'em a little vague so as many people can relate to them as possible...

Seems pretty simple to me; if you've pitched this material to the band and they're not interested, keep working on it outside and honing your vocal and writing chops. Your tunes might be right for the next band or another. I'm not intimately familiar with the current hard rock market, but it sounds like there's some potential either way. (your band sounds great, too, though not to my taste) Work on your pitch; see if you can't find a live harmony singing situation of some kind, and definitely keep recording; you could be a singer and a guitarist away from a better fitting band situation. And, of course you can always submit to Taxi.

Hi. I agree with the previous posts. The backing is great and the song sounds cool but the vocals are not up to the same standard. I reckon you should find someone to re-do the vocal here and then pitch it to Taxi. Cheers, Doug

Great feedback guys, and much appreciated! I think you put me back up on the fence though bwd! If I can get my vocals up to par I would pitch my music to taxi and form a band with me fronting it. If not, or if there's no potential for me doing so, I will find a singer right for this music, form a band, and sit behind the kit as I've always done...
