Why download Kontakt Player

Post by byllsong » Wed Feb 14, 2018 1:49 pm

I am installing and uninstalling various free vst's, trying things out.
What are the benefits of something like Kontakt Player?
What does it come with?
Looking to get some information before I download it...if at all.
Thanks
Billy

https://www.native-instruments.com/en/p ... -5-player/

because there are libaries, both kontakt and 3rd party that use it
https://www.native-instruments.com/en/p ... dbykontakt
https://www.native-instruments.com/en/p ... libraries/

there are also many libraries available that only use the full version of Kontakt, you have to read the requirements, the player version doesn't work.
the free included libraries are usually limited versions of products you can buy extra.

If you don't buy any libraries that run on the player, i wouldn't bother with it. i use it for ow drums, no longer available, and 2 scarbee bass libraries, the rickenbacher and the p-bass.

The stock library you can get for Kontakt has some good stuff in it. I have been using it. However, the drum samples behave strangely when I drag them into my project. I can't get into the midi and edit it in the piano roll like I can for other libraries. Luckily, the Kontakt player gives you a lot of tools for controlling the eq and other things you might want to change in the drums. But you can't edit the notes.

Simply put, it's the industry standard sample playback engine and sooner than later you're going to want a library that runs on the full version; might as well get familiar with the controls.

Great info Len!

I've been using kontakt since ver 1. The latest full version I own is kontakt 4. It has a really good library that comes with it, however, like you said, I also have kontakt 5 Player and it will show the k4 library as in demo mode and then it will shut off after (x) minutes. So, I have both k4 full ver and k5 player installed.

I've been pretty happy with it, but I did have a RAM issue with the Abby Road drum sample libraries. They sound great, are very configurable, but you need to have a fairly good DAW to run them in real time without choking your system. I've got a good DAW now--and actually decided to get it when my old DAW couldn't handle the Abby Road samples!

I bought Independence Pro a couple years ago for about $65, something to explore and piddle with. I bought a couple of drum drops kits that are on sale recently, so now I can use it.
The downside of Kontakt is the price. The problem with the libraries is that they're in a proprietary format, and not just simple wav or aiff. I've not been real keen on vsti's recently unless they're percussive type instruments. The plus of wav or aiff is that you can always import and edit them in your daw if you have problems with the sampler.

The sample libraries I buy for kontakt have the proprietary .nki file for the overall instrument tweeks, fx, etc. but they also have the individual samples, which if I'm not mistaken are in .wav format. I can also play individual .wav or .aiff files in the free player even when the .nki file won't because it's one of 'those' libraries.

Long ago there was a soft sampler called Independence Free by Yellow Tools. It was really intuitive and I used it a lot. Fast forward to now and it looks like Magix bought them. I might try them again. One thing I liked is they gave you like a multi GB library for free too.

Hope your doing well!

Cheers!
