I think the main reason is the vocal ...it's got a proper melody...plus it's got guitars and some typical pop type parts

Everything is merging though...back in the day I would never have called it Pop....it's got some Hip Hop influences for sure

Okay maybe the beat is " old school" hip hop like I can hear Will Smith "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" but more on the pop side.

The key is that the main artist is a singer who is singing in this song. The hop hop element, (verse of rapping), comes from a guest artist.

The music itself can be interchangeable these days between pop, hop hop, and R&B but the style of vocal delivery by the main artist usually drives genre designation.

Interesting point! Makes sense.

Tom
In that case , it begs the question what makes the artist..Pop..Hip Hop etc

Hip hip has impacted pretty much every genre out there, even Country music. In this song, the drums are based on an acoustic kit, the bass is pretty fat, but the elements of hip hop these days are crisp hi hats and tight sampled snares, claps and snaps. Funky guitar and keys helps keep it in the pop realm as well. The rap breakdowns don't make it hop hop... but it might have been called hip hop 20 years ago. The genres continue to blend and merge... :)
