World music........

Post by CHuckmott » Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:00 pm

I just bought a used Rykodisc WOrld Music sampler that I really enjoy listening to and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for similar discs, or "must have" world music albums. Other then Buena Vista Social CLub, which is great but own it already. Thoughts?

we have a few of these http://www.putumayo.com/

I dunno if they are more or less authentic than others, but they sound great.

Hi Chuck -- This could be a huge list, but I'll throw in just a few of my favorites:

Music of Bulgaria (Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic) - Nonesuch Explorer Series

anything by Toumani Diabaté (kora player from Mali)

Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté: Ali and Toumani (World Circuit/Nonesuch)

Salif Keita: Moffou (Decca)

Festival in the Desert (World Village)

Tinariwen: Amassakoul (World Village)

Bali: Music from the Morning of the World (Nonesuch)

Best of the Chieftains (2002 remastered)

I haven't even touched the list of music from Japan, China, Thailand, Persia, Turkey, India, etc. Lots of amazing music out there. Have fun!

Richard

Thanks Remmet. Nice. There are also some "Best World Music ALbums" but I wanted to get Taxi members perspectives also. Thanks. Keep the suggestions coming if you like.

Are you talking authentic ethnic music or "world beat"?

Music with a strong world influence but which is not authentic ethnic music from a particular place...e.g. Adiemus, music of Cirque Du Soleil, the score to Survivor, Life Of Pi etc etc

Actually recommendations for both/either would be great. Sampling the adlemus stuff as I write this, very cool.

Actually this list is quite extensive so I guess the question would be where to start: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?i ... 1000416151 (Love lists like this and habitually seek them out, as well as current best albums of the year lists). Built my entire jazz collectoin of lists like this one.
