I prefer to use available and affordable gear that allows me to hear all the defects in the recordings, but to each his own.
I think that if you have the money to spend, an all-analog system will always win a listening test, but accuracy wins out over listening pleasure, in (possibly) my case only.

Derek: Really GREAT quality vinyl sounds fantastic with a great cartridge/stylus! I recently adapted 50+ vinyl records to Gold-CDs, but am still looking for a new receiver that has a great phono pre-amp --- I'm partial to Onkyo or Yamaha --- Any suggestions!?
Best,

I don't even have a turntable right now. This discussion has got me to thinking about setting one up again though. I could lose myself going through all the old vinyl I still have. Great thread Ern.

I've got a nice (and HEAVY) direct-drive Sony turntable that I put a new premium Grado cartridge on to record my most precious LPs. I used a 1x Marantz Pro CD recorder, and the best Gold CD-Rs you can buy (about $1 each). The results were great! The CD-Rs sound a little brighter, the LPs sound a little warmer. Apples & Oranges! --- Of course, you can't play an LP in a car, unless you have a Rolls Royce or something like that!llama wrote: I don't even have a turntable right now. Speaking of premium sound, I remember the members of YES bitching about Squire tweaking his bass sound for 6 hours, and Anderson's perfectionism on "Fragile." Anderson finally said, "Do you want a work that will stand the test of time, or just settle for mediocrity?" He got his point across.
That said, a great bassist who I gigged with for years said about "Fragile," "There's NO high end on that recording!" I'm not sure about that --- has that ever been re-mastered? George Massenburg could do wonders with it if that is truly the case!

Yep. It was remastered for CD with an addition studio outtake track of Roudabout. I actually find this a little brittle compared to the vinyl. Most if not all the Yes back catalog has been remastered for CD.ernstinen wrote: has that ever been re-mastered? George Massenburg could do wonders with it if that is truly the case!![]()

Yep, I was referring to the original 80s CD transfers in my prior post.
