Decent budgeted Mic

I'm excited to be recording a violinist early next week.. only problem is my mic is outdated & bad quality..
Am looking to get a new one this weekend &my budget's only 200 or less..
Anyone know a good budgeted mic I should look out for?

Kel, I would say a ribbon mic, one of the cheap chinese ones.

I've tried the Fathead pretty extensively, if you need a dark, very un-hyped sound it's good but for me def not a one mic solution. It's kinda the opposite of the super hyped cheap LDC's...

I would steer clear of the cheap condensers, especially for a violin, the harsh highs would probably sound like nails on a chalkboard. I call dark and unhyped, natural.

Yeah, it would probably sound good on violin but for me never worked as a vocal or acoustic guitar mic. But for what it does it is a good mic, and inexpensive!

Thanks Len & Ethan.. I'l try to use my old dynamic one first since cheap condenser isn't gonna work..
The ribbon ones look interesting.. only problem is that I'm recording violins once in a while but need to record vocal parts more often.. Hope my old dynamic one works for now..

See if you can find an Electro Voice RE 20. New it might be more than 200 but you might find one used. A great all around dynamic with very little proximity effect and excellent isolation from sound behind the mic. It was used for Stevie Wonders vocals for years. Worth a look!

I have also had really good luck the Blue mics. I have the Bluebird that works very well. Also look at the Octava SDC mics. I have heard nice things about them as well.

I have also heard very good things about: http://www.naiant.com/naiant.html. I haven't used any of their mics, but you can't beat the prices and they seem to have a decent rep.

I second the Electrovoice RE 20 or PL20......great dynamic mic....I have two, bought them both used, paid $200.00 each...Right at your budget...... THE standard for radio announcement.......
