If you don't have an SM57 yet, you can't really go wrong. Never recorded violin with one but they sound great on guitar.

Instead of electro voice RE20 use this one:

I own RE 20 and this one and I use it over the RE 20 most of the time. The mics are apples to apples because they have large diaphragms. I think the Heils is larger.

I've used an SM57 on fiddle, and it works very well. My opinion, most dynamic mics will, especially large diaphragm or ribbons.

Next time I'm mic shopping, I'm going to look at the Guage mics. There's been some positive comments from Taxi members about these.

Yea, I wish I would have bought the Gauge 87 copy at the rally last November......

The Gauge web site seems to be down right now, but I found a pretty cool data base while looking for the gauge site

http://recordinghacks.com/microphones

You could possibly find a acceptable Chinese LDC that is labeled as warm....like a MXL V-67G or a Rode NT1A. all in your $200.00 budget....I purchased a used Rode NT1A for $80.00 cash.......

I second the 57 also, if you don't have one, get one, those go for about $50 each used....... absolute standard for snare and electric guitar....!!!!!!! and as Mr. Mojobone said, probably would work for violin if used slightly off axis......

Mics are like crayons, it does't hurt to have many colors....LOL

It should be mentioned; the Rode is not a Chinese mic, it's built in Australia, unless I'm mistaken.

You needn't be; Rob's the decider, heh. He personally selects and guarantees his product, (as do I, for my own products/projects) so you can be sure his product will meet your needs. This is why there are occasionally some issues with availability, as each shipment must be vetted. HTH
