Back to the drawing board!
the returns:
Book 'Em http://snd.sc/zamwTM
Instrumental Performance - Guitar is a bit "out of the pocket" rhythmically.
Failsafe http://snd.sc/zkXjoO
Instrumental Performance, Music - Bass is really hot in the mix.
It's On http://snd.sc/AqSzAa
Brass sound synthetic.
the Listing:
D120220IN
“Go To” SOUL/FUNK/CHILLOUT INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSERS a la David Holmes to Booker T and the MG’s, etc., are needed by a Top-Tier Los Angeles based Music Publisher for Film/TV placements as well as movie trailers. QUOTING THE PUBLISHER: “I need composers that can create tracks reminiscent to the ‘Oceans 11’ soundtrack by David Holmes, but with the classic grooves of Booker T and the MG’s.” Instrumentation is open, but should sound AUTHENTIC to the genre and the artists referenced. As always, DO NOT copy or rip-off the referenced artists. Use them ONLY as a guide for VIBE, MOOD, and TONE. The tracks you submit will be their first impression of whether you could be a “GO TO” composer for their ongoing Film/TV needs. For that reason, please submit at least TWO tracks so they can see the full scope of possibilities with your material and your production style. If you don’t have an extensive list of credits, it’s okay... but be sure to attach your Bio and include anything that might show your capabilities to turn around material quickly and professionally. EXCELLENT performances are ESSENTIAL and broadcast quality is needed for this one. Please submit 2-3 instrumentals online or per CD, include bio with credit list/discography. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than NOON (PST) on Monday, February 20, 2012. TAXI# D120220IN

Hi Andy,
I can't say I totally agree with Taxi. The first one I realize you were playing off of the "+" of each beat, a lot of the time. That is, not on the down beat. So I'm not sure how that necessarily equates to not being in the pocket.
The bass seemed equally hot to me on both "Failsafe" and "It's On" but they didn't make that comment on the second one (and I didn't think the levels were overly hot on either of them personally)
And were the horns supposed to sound real? Retro (60's) horns would sound more like what you have here wouldn't they?
Just my own opinions of course and I'm certainly no expert. - Roger

Andy-
IM absolutely laughing my A OFF-
I did the same listing and got virtually the same comments- A
Im sure its me- but my brain absolutely says some of these screeners are deaf;
Case in point-
I sent in a listing a while back that was in 7/8 for something they asked for quirky-
the screener said that it sounded 'clunky'-
what else to do but laugh?
You know something- tbh- I actually like what you did even more than what I did- Id love to hear what they forwarded.
Your tracks sound great!

Andy,
Good tracks. I liked 'em all. Shake it off. Press on. I can relate, it's tough sometimes.

Re: 0 for 3 on D120220IN
Andy,
Cool tunes. Well done.
On Book Em, to my ear what makes the gtr feel out of the pocket during the solo is actually the organ part. The comping on the organ could be simpler, right now they sound like they're fighting rhythmically there. more whole notes in he organ would allow the guitar solo some room to breathe and play with the groove.
On Failsafe the only thing I can think of that may have made them think the bass was loud would possibly be the eq on the kick drum. It reinforces the fundamental of the bass when they hit together. To me it's a minor issue but one that could influence a listener. A thinner kick might have worked but I like the contrast of the busy thinner bass sound with a fatter kick. A matter of taste, IMO.
The brass on It's On sound a bit too perfect in the unisons and the crescendos are all the same and you do several in a row. Sometimes it's repetition of the same set of samples that can call attention to the fact that it's samples.
Overall your music sounds strong to me. I dig your guitar work. This return is just a pitch that didnt happen. Keep putting it out there. We are all playing the percentages!
Sounds great to me!
