80's hip hop male vocal - confused...

Post by ochaim » Mon Mar 18, 2013 12:08 pm

I feel like this listing is one of those where, you're probably better off knowing less about a genre to really make sense of it.

So we have Kurtis Blow (I don't know what to make of the wrong spelling in the name), early 80's, maybe a couple notable tunes, very early 80's R&B style music, RUN DMC best known for their work in the '86-87, Public Enemy best known for their work '88-91.

Stylistically, couldn't be more different from all 3 artists. If I could find a common thread, it would be aggressive male vocal, well, kurtis blow, he had confidence I guess. Other than that, the rap styles were vastly different.

Which direction would you go?

Run DMC is a natural fit for me, since I've got plenty of returns with the comment "vocals too old school". I'm a shoe-in for this one!! so I may just forge ahead with that as a template.

But knowing how ambitious I can be, I'll probably try one in all three, the limit is 3 songs after all.. LOL!

Any thoughts?
'80s SOUNDING HIP HOP SONGS with MALE VOCALS in the style of Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, Curtis Blow, etc., are needed by a Music Supervisor currently working on a **FEATURE** Film. He's looking for ORIGINAL songs that have a THROWBACK Hip Hop sound that dates back to the era of the referenced artists. Your lyrics MUST be UNIVERSAL and GENERAL to work for the film. In other words, they shouldn't tell a story of their own that could conflict with the overall script, a particular scene, or any dialog. NO third party samples of other artists' music or profanity allowed for this pitch. Vocal and instrumental performances must be top-notch! MALE vocals ONLY. MID-to- UPTEMPO ONLY. You must own or control 100% of your Composition and Master Recording. Broadcast quality is needed (excellent home recordings are fine.) Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO FULL CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Monday, March 25, 2013. TAXI #Y130325HH

well go for it!

can't help thinking that the 80's ref relates to the track as much as the vocals.

Listen to Raising Hell and check the sound of the track vs. what happens today. combine that with your old-school vocals, and its probably a winner.

lyric themes - how come nobody writes a song like You be Illin' these days?

Good call,Andy!

I was going to make it "80's sounding" and leave it at that. But It mentioning "throwback" to that era, kinda implies its to sound like its made today but inspired by that era.
