80's Instrumental - feedback please

Post by Paulie » Sun Jul 05, 2015 7:18 pm

Having played most of these synths when they first came out, this one was a fun romp down memory lane. My old setup used to include a Yamaha DX-7, Korg DSS-1 sampler, Sequential Tom drum machine, Yamaha TX81Z and an Oberheim Matrix 6 (have the Matrix1000 still in my EWI rack). Oh, I had a first version Akai EWI and a Yamaha WX-7.

Here's the track: https://soundcloud.com/paulcroteau/roug ... ubiks-mood

My main questions: 1) Does the intro not fit in a cue listing, and 2) is the climax too busy for a cue?

Thanks folks!

Ya I think I would get rid of the intro and just start with the fill.mAlso, at 1:19 that alarm clock noise got annoying to me. I would try having it loud on the first beep, then decrescendo on the next three or even seven and continue that through its entirety. I think the climax works. Great track!

I would agree about the intro being dropped. I like the ending a lot. I have to admit that I didn't hear much in the reference tracks that made me think New Wave. But that was a long time ago and maybe what I associate with New Wave is not accurate. Any I like your track. Much success with it!! :)

Paulie - I agree with the others about the intro and great job nailing the 80's sounds! Best of luck.

It is odd trying to recreate the New Wave sound because there are so many variations. For example, English new wave vs American New Wave. I had a hard time trying to determine how to classify the reference tracks from the listing.

Well, there's "New Wave" and the reference tracks the listing provides. I'm going with what they linked to. :)
Thanks for the feedback, the intro is getting the axe.

File updated... killed the Rhodes intro, added a filter sweep channel, and topped it off with the Dada Life "Sausage Fattener" to the final mix.

When I think new wave, I think gary Neeman "Cars" or maybe Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams."

I agree with you Paulie, New Wave to me was The Cars, Blondie, The Pretenders etc. all of the Music Metalheads like me avoided like the Plague. But who cares now right.

I think you have really done a great job of hitting the "80's" sound. Add a few guitar power chords and you have a Survivor song there Bud. The intro was almost Loverboyish for a sec . The only thing that doesn't sit right with me is the drum sounds.
They are to tinny or Bongo like to me I would rather hear a more convincing "Simmons" drum sound, but that is just my opinion.

Good Luck Dude,

EJB
For the record I Love The Eurythmics.
I used to have an Oberheim OB-X and OB-8. Fun Machines.

OK, I guess I'm commenting on the new mix now? It's kinda cool to have both mixes available for "latecomers" to hear. (hint)

Well, this is full of everything we make fun of the 80's about, eh?

I'd drop the high hat click in the intro or substitute it.... listened again... just take it out I think.
Your "horn synth" runs a little behind because of the swell and it makes the track sound a bit sloppy, slide it forward in time. Also, try pulling it out for some sections (and bringing something in to replace it?) so that it gets un-repetitive.

I agree with Russell on the 'Horn Synth". I was going to mention it but I didn't know what to call it.

OK, replaced the snare, killed the entire intro, added some stereo panning to the Linn Drum fills. Gotta stop sometime, getting up at 0 dark 30 to drive up to Austin and attend review meetings for the next three days. This day job is really cutting into my Taxi time!

This isn't Facebook, and it's not a #ThrowbackThursday, but since we are talking 80s, here's a picture of me with my ride circa 1985. The photo doesn't do it justice, it was clean, and fast. '82 Camero Iroc Z, fuel injected, glass t-top, rolling loud with my Blaupunkt stereo. Wish I still had it. Ah yes, the 80s. 8-)
