80s Rock Song Remastered From Reel-To-Reel

Post by ernstinen » Wed Aug 23, 2017 9:36 pm

Hey All,

I recently got my Tascam 22-2 1/4" 15 i.p.s reel-to-reel tape deck refurbished, and I'm glad I did! Today, I remastered a song recorded 30 years ago direct from the 22-2 to an Alesis Masterlink, and MAN, the clarity of an old reel-to-reel tape (stored "tails out") still knocks my socks off! The multi-track was a Tascam 38 1/2" 8 track, but the reason this recording still makes the hair on my arms stand on end is the drums/bass rhythm track. I recorded the drums in a huge 40'x30' loft in downtown L.A. with a 25' ceiling with the bassist playing at the same time in another room where my Soundcraft board and the 38 were located. I used a "John Bonham" style method with 2 overheads about 15' over the drum kit, a snare mic and a kick mic. That was it! The keys and my guitar and vocal were recorded later, but the ENERGY from that huge room really was inspirational, especially on the guitar solo at the end.

Oh, why did I remaster this song? Because of the following listing (the song is certainly 80s Pop/Punk/Rock, but it may be too "New Wave" vocally for this listing --- whatever; it sure is UPTEMPO!):

ORIGINAL, 1980’s-Style PUNK POP SONGS with Male Vocals are U-R-G-E-N-T-L-Y needed for several $1,500, NON-Exclusive, Direct-to-Music Supervisor placements in a Popular TV Series. They’re looking for authentic, Mid-to-Up Tempo Songs that could generally fit in the stylistic wheelhouse of the following references we got from the client: “Should I stay Or Go” by The Clash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN1WwnEDWAM “Just Like Heaven “by The Cure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dhn_Iiqxde “I Melt With You” by Modern English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuN6gs0AJls Note: We don’t think the last reference (I Melt With You) is all that Punk/Pop-ish, but it is very 1980s, and pretty iconic for that era. Please submit original songs with a distinctive sound, inspired by the ‘80s Punk/Pop scene. Be sure your submissions are well performed, with authentic sounding Rock band instrumentation, catchy melodies, and a hooky, memorable chorus. Recently recorded songs with a retro sound, or authentic old vintage master recording will both work for this pitch. Quoting The Source: “It's important that the songs have an authentic ‘80's sound.” Universal lyrics that avoid references to specific names, dates, times, places, brands and profanity could give you some edge, but we don’t think they’re an absolute necessity, as these songs will likely be used as Background Source Music. Please do NOT copy the referenced artists in any way, shape, or form. Use them as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). The estimated license fee for this placement is (up-to) $1,500, depending on the ultimate use. This is a Non-Exclusive, Direct-to-Music Supervisor pitch. You'll get 100% of the sync fee, and 100% of any applicable performance royalties. Plus, you'll also keep 100% of your Publishing and Master ownership. You need to own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. Please submit 1-3 Songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Music Supervisor - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than on 11:59PM (PDT), on Thursday, August 24th, 2017. TAXI #U170824PP

Hope you enjoy my 30-year-old engineering experiment and the sound of ANALOG!

Hey ern,

Really enjoyed listening to your track! It has a lot of energy, a fat rhythm section, and some very tasty lead guitar. You're so right about the analog sound that you got with the bass/drums. I recorded with a Tascam 38 back in the early 1980's and it's hard to exactly duplicate that analog edginess with digital.

Really liked your intro guitar lick....it effectively sets the stage for the feel of the track. Your overall mix and instrumentation sounds very "Cheap Trick-ish" to me, which I like since they're one of my favorite bands. Also liked your vocal lead-in to the guitar solo at 3:07 (one thing....IMHO, your guitar solo seemed a little long but your superb playing tended to justify its length and ultimately make it worth while). The vocals sound more like Modern English's "Melt" rather than power punk but certainly they fit that cool 1980's era and, IMO, you meet the criteria for this listing and should easily get a forward on the track.

I also submitted two of my songs for this listing. You can hear them at http://www.taxi.com/jmkslyder ("Don't Want Me No More" and "Boom Box Baby") if you are so inclined. Anyway good luck with the submission!

Sounds great, Ern!

Definitely has more of an Oingo Boingo feel (minus the horns) than anything in the references, but this listing is kind of confusing anyway because I wouldn't call any of those references "pop punk". The Clash almost gets the closest, on account of them actually having been a "punk" band at some point, though "Should I Stay..." always felt more like straight up rock and roll to me, for the most part :)

Good luck... I would love to see this in the (probably) upcoming re-make of Weird Science!
