A Beginners, Beginners Guide To Getting Forwards

Post by RHicks » Sat Apr 27, 2019 6:07 am

Whilst I’ve been writing (and not completing) songs for many years, It wasn’t until I joined TAXI that I became focussed on what was required to obtain that magical ‘Forward’ notification in my inbox.

Now, 6 months in to my membership, last week I received 3 contract offers via TAXI opportunities. I’m delighted, of course, but I had to change a few behaviours before my ‘Returns’ rate flipped in favour of ‘Forwards’ and therefore increasing my chances of a deal.

This will be well trodden ground for the experienced users of the TAXI service but I’m pitching this article to newcomers who are not getting past the dreaded ‘Return’ email notification. This is not a suggestion to anyone but merely what I’ve learned.

Here’s my plan…

The Brief

The Brief is CRITICAL. Initially, I only ever skimmed the brief and thought, oh they want a Rock instrumental? Here’s one. I’d pay my $5 and send it over. It didn’t matter to me that they didn’t want a guitar solo, that the song should be 3 minutes and not 5. I stupidly thought, well…it’s in the right ballpark, maybe they’ll like it and I’ll have this playing relentlessly on some Nascar show for years on end. I couldn’t be more wrong. I now Follow this plan:
Select only the briefs that you know you can do, the ones you’ll be best at, the ones you’re excited by
View the linked music references first. This will give you a good steer
Print the brief off. Use a highlighter pen to pick out ALL of the key words and phrases. You should be looking for things like ‘should be 2:30 long with stinger ending’ ‘should develop as the song progresses’ ‘don’t use choirs’ ‘make the piano sound authentic and NOT MIDI quantised’
Enter those highlighted key words/phrases into a To-Do list
Tick off the To-Do items as you go
Re-Check the brief every 30 to 60 minutes until you’re done. don’t veer off track

If you tick everything off, you’ll know you’ve done a pretty good job and you’ve actively listened to the brief. Use the TAXI forum if you’re not 100% and get a second opinion.

              Be Productive
Read the book ‘Eat That Frog’. Learn that in order to be productive, you should focus your first activity around the hardest thing you need to do. Highly recommended read
Set a time limit. Say you’re going to get this song finished in something like one or two days
One complete pass in 2 hours. I use my weapon of choice, either a guitar or piano to do one complete take of a composition idea. Doesn’t matter about timing or errors at this stage. It’s merely getting the hardest part done first. This provides you with the structure of the song end to end.
CHECK the brief to ensure you’re on target
Layer the composition with additional instruments as required
RE-CHECK the brief to ensure you remain on target
Fix any timing errors or re-record where necessary
Go for a walk, talk with humans, have some lunch. This resets/refreshes your head
                                RE-CHECK the brief
Listen to the composition from beginning to end. Note down points you’d like to fix/add to/embellish
                                    RE-CHECK the brief…repeat until done

                                    Be Organised

As I slowly became more productive, my song roster was increasing week on week. I started losing focus on what song was submitted where, what terms, what company, what date….in fact I write so many songs now that I don’t recall what the song I wrote two weeks ago sounds like. Stupid I know! I’d naively pitched at song to a TAXI brief that had already been signed elsewhere and at this point I knew I’d lost track.
Create some kind of song tracking solution. You can use Excel, a well featured To-Do list or whatever suits. I use a hosted To-DO application which means it’s sync’d over my main computers as well as my iPhone and iPad.
Ensure that every song title is listed, the date is was written, your ownership of that material, what submissions you’ve made either Exclusive or Non-Exclusive, Signed contract details etc
META Tag your songs with your name and date.
Every new song get’s entered into your log and updated every time there is some kind of update relating to that composition.
Use a To-Do list and stack up a list called ‘Pipeline’ for all the opportunities that arrive. Include due dates to ensure you stay on top of everything

                                              Keep Learning

When not writing, or taking a lunch break, dedicate yourself to learning about production techniques, in-depth knowledge of the tools you already own, listen to music and understand what you’re hearing.

Subscribe to loads of music production based youtube channels (including TAXI TV) and use this as a dedicated TV channel of your own. I love doing this….it’s better than most TV!

Oh, and always take on the feedback from TAXI for any return you get. It helps enormously and let’s face it, you’ll never stop learning.

                                              Conclusion

Whilst I’m certainly not a ‘success story’, I do hope to be one and I’m working hard towards making that a reality. Using the formula above has helped me flip my returns rate on its head.

It should be noted repeatedly that a ‘forward’ doesn’t get you a deal, but it does increase your chances.

Roughly speaking, I write an average of 4 instrumentals per week. At around 4 months in, I’m presently looking at around 80% forwards and 20% Returns. This is in stark contrast to when I first signed up. Of those returns, I learn from the feedback and ensure that composition can live another day. Nothing is wasted.

TAXI provides me with focus. It provides me a structured week. The TAXI community is also very supportive and you should tap into ALL of the resources available. It really does help. Thank You TAXI !

I hope this helps other budding writers looking to get that first Forward.

                                              Cheers

Good list. A few of omissions that I think are worth re-stating

                                              1. Read the books Demystifying the Cue & Demystifying the Genre they are both excellent and give you blueprints for how to make your cues.

                                              2. Deconstruct the references, get a sheet of paper and write down the tempos, structure, instruments used , rhythmic patterns/playing styles ( is it an 8th note synth bass ? triplet hi hats ? 4 to the floor kick ? Real or electronic..etc. ), production techniques, FX used, how does it transition between sections ? Etc.

                                              3. Import the Ref tracks into your DAW, use something like Magic AB

                                              Hey Rob,

Thanks for taking the time to write that post. I know in this biz time can be priceless! Congrats on the contracts and the forwards % and hopefully many placements will follow.

Btw that was a wonderful roadmap for newbies and seasoned member alike. You made some salient points.

Also I absolutely agree w Cosmic Dolphin's response to your post -regarding Dean's book "Demystifying the Cue" . Its' a great read as is Robin Fredericks "Shortcuts To Songwriting For Film & Tv". I've learned so much from both.

Best of luck to you and thanks again for posting! John
