DaveI've gotten a few "Standards Panel" awards in the past, which go to composers who write "serious" (concert) music. I don't know if they changed the name of the award, or if it's something different. BTW, my piece "Elegy" SHOULD be released on CD soon. It was recorded by the Kiev Philharmonic last fall. --- As Tom Petty says, "the waiting is the hardest part." Ern

So is this something you had to apply for, a peer review sort of thing, or was it through getting some music published in an auspicious manner? (Either way, serious congratulations. That is great!)

Okay, I cheated and looked it up. Music trivia... category Ernmusic, 2006 (sans Monkee mobile)What is ...ASCAPLUS is an awards program that provides cash and recognition to: 1) Active writers in the early and mid stages of their careers, and 2) To established writers whose main activity is outside of broadcast media.WHO IS ELIGIBLEThe ASCAPLUS Awards Program is for writer members of any genre whose performances are primarily in venues not surveyed; and/or writer members whose catalogs have prestige value for which they would not otherwise be compensated.HOW TO PARTICIPATETo be considered for an ASCAPLUS Award, complete the application form. All applications must be postmarked by JUNE 1.WHO DETERMINES AWARDSASCAPLUS Awards are determined annually by a panel of distinguished music experts who are neither members, nor employees of ASCAP, and are completely independent in their Award adjudication.HOW AWARDS ARE DETERMINEDASCAPLUS Awards are based on panel review of recent activity of writer applicants. Each applicant is considered on merit and in the context of all others applying. ASCAPLUS is not a contest or competition involving the critical evaluation of any specific work or works. The primary basis for panel determinations is the activity generated by each member's catalog, with emphasis on recent performances.

This little blurb came into my email as part of a "music news" thing that I get from time to time...Approximately $2.68 million in cash awards for 2006 - 2007 has been made to writer members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) by the Society's ASCAPlus Awards Panels, it was announced today by ASCAP President & Chairman Marilyn Bergman. The majority of the $2.68 million in proceeds were awarded to L. John Ernst.Actually, I made up the last line. Dave
