A return for too low audio levels on Y101123IN

Post by musicalweather » Thu Dec 02, 2010 1:56 pm

Hi all,

I got a return on my composition(s) titled "Journey into Relief" and "Journey into Relief NV" on the listing posted below.

http://www.taxi.com/charlottemcmillan

This was a Y/N listing, so I didn't get a full evaluation. However, the reviewer did say that the "audio levels were too low." Hmmm... I think I understand this... maybe. But gosh, if the levels are too low, can't they just turn up the volume?

I'll add that I originally wrote this music as a demo for a commercial; there was dialogue all the way through, so the music had to be underneath that.

I'm sure there could be other reasons why it was turned down, and I understand that on these Y/N listings we just have to take our lumps. But since no other reasons than the low audio level were given for the return, I'm feeling a little bummed.

If you have any thoughts about this, please share. Thanks! :)

MODERN, SOPHISTICATED INSTRUMENTAL TRACK THAT TELLS A STORY needed by aMAJOR LEAGUE AD AGENCY. If selected, your song will be used in a 45-second TV commercial promoting a HIGH-PROFILE NATIONAL HEALTH INSURER. This spot has a Problem/Solution structure: the first 20 seconds of your music should reflect frustration or disappointment followed by a distinct, natural transition into a more positive, hopeful mood. Quoting the agency here, "The visuals begin with a woman walking but seemingly getting nowhere and feeling frustrated.Musically, think in terms of a loop or riff that keeps repeating but gradually evolves into a gentle, contemporary beat that is maintained throughout the rest of the spot. Other suggestions for the "change-up" include going from minor to major, minimal layers to more dense, a tempo change, a subtle genre change, etc. This ad is geared towards an adult demographic, so focus on an energy that helps support the visuals (i.e. the simple plucking of strings, a light fun piano, etc). Nothing too dark, edgy, or aggressive.Your music must support a wall-to-wall voice-over, so please avoid using anydistracting elements. BROADCAST QUALITY OR EXCELLENT HOME RECORDINGS ONLY.

The drums sounded low and far away. I would try a buss compressor or limiter.

Hi Charlotte,

I am surprised this got returned for "loudness" issues considering the genre. Nothing a simple mastering job wouldn't fix though. I heard your other music so I know you are fully capable. ;)

Good Luck in the future,

Rob

I HEAR YOU! (no pun intended)

your work IS impeccable, just move on to something else and don't let it bother you too much.
Most folks here will advise you: write-submit-forget.

take care

Thanks, Adonis; that means a lot to me. And thanks Rob and Len911... I'm going to start focusing more on compression.
