I think we're probably starting to split hairs here on the artist thing, but I'll give one more example from the GDC of the art/craft side:

Inon Zur was one of the composers on the "Emotion in Game Music" panel. They showed a scene from a game about being in a western town in the desert, etc. (can't remember the name of the game). Inon spoke very clearly about how he evoked the sound of the landscape by using high and low strings and putting a french horn in the middle.

My theory is that his artist brain was inspired to enhance the visuals by painting a sonic picture and his craft brain knew how to orchestrate that picture for maximum effect, to give the player that wow factor.

And his business success allows him the freedom to pick projects that give him the opportunity to more fully express his inner artist and flex his great craft muscles at the same time.

I prefer the holistic approach. Mostly because I can't afford to be a flaky artist. Others may have that luxury, I, on the other hand, would like to make my living as an artist, which makes the craft and business side inevitable.

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Here are some more. If you google "Industry code 856" and NAICS code 711510 and 711130 that will give you the lumping of songwriters and composers, amongst other similar professions, and you can see stats from the census bureau to your heart's content. Here's a starting place:

So is it right that you would add thee zeros to the total money column?

You read my mind!!!

If that is the case then there is more money in this business to be had than I thought. Certainly more than the negative author of the report that was posted because he did not post ANY facts at all.

It seems to me that the biggest problem in our business is not that the opportunity is limited, but rather our time is. Music takes time to create even if you crank them out.

It's a good article but I don't think it says anything we don't already know. Too many people making music, too many libraries bombarding the music sups, etc... So clearly those whose music stands out from the crowd and have the most professional personal skills will do better.

While it's true that relationships, relationships, relationships are extremely important, I can see a potential negative effect from this article. Folks will rush out to purchase a directory of music supervisors to get their contact information and, in some cases, make the whole thing worse.

Why do you say we know that?

How do we know that?

What is "to many"?

Hi Dwayne
I guess I should have said it's info that's been 'out there' a long time and a lot of people are aware of...

I have no idea how to define "too many"...

I think for us the question should be how many opportunities are there for us be it cable, films etc..

That is the figure that would matter most to start with.
