Quote:Hi Steve, thanks for caring, even though we're not friends. That's so nice of you. I had another engineer years ago who could do that but he loved my voice to bits and my current guy just sorta likes it. Ya know, in a vague, distant way. It's my voice that's driving me nuts. I think he finally got the essing problem solved but now it sounds like I'm singing out of a coffeecan. I'd rather sound like k.d. lang, thanks evah so. Just because we're not friends doesn't mean I don't care... I think kd sounds like that 'cause she's Canadian. Can you call your old engineer and find out how he got your voice to sound the way you like it?

I can try to find him. He disappeared into the woods in Georgia though. Ha! That's what he gets for working with me. There is another engineer I worked with on the last album who might be able to help. Thanks! So, what's the going rate to be your friend? I'm guessin' you take Paypal.

If you can cut good sounding tracks, I've got a friend in Oakland who, besides being a world class bass player, is also a very, very good engineer. He would probably be able to take delivery of tracks via FTP and mix them and do a great job. He mixed my wife's jazz album and took great care on the voice. It came out great. He's the guy with the Adams that I mentioned above.http://www.studiorhythm.com/Welcome.htmlThere are other people that will do mixing via online delivery, Dan is the only one I've worked with and I'd recommend him.Tell him John Mazzei sent you.Mazz

On the subject of the Mixcubes, they're awesome! I got a pair and love them. Like anything they're a reference that needs to be learned, but they work well for checking balances, etc. And they look really cool, too... Cheers,Justin

I owe you. The last two tunes I've written in a hurry for Dispatch really need touching up big time and this guy could be the answer to a dream for me. I'll check it out as soon as I'm done with class tonight. Thanks!

I'm sure there's some great mixers for hire here on the forum too, I wasn't intending to bypass anyone here, I've just had personal experience with this guy.Good luck,Mazz

One comment about speakers you're using for a second opinion, which I hope isn't bleeding obvious: they should be very different from your main speakers.I recently picked up a pair of UREI 809As, which are 12" versions of the big 813s every studio in the '80s and early '90s had. These aren't speakers I would necessarily have chosen given a blank slate, but I put in a lowball bid on ebay and won. So I have Blue Sky System Ones, which are very nice sounding NFMs with a subwoofer, and a pair of horn-loaded studio mains - chalk and cheese.

Thanks Nick,That point may not be obvious to everyone so it's well taken! The MixCubes are pretty different from my Event Project Studio 8s.I remember using the 813s. I liked to listen to mixes up on them for bass balance and to impress clients when they were loud but I didn't ever mix completely on them.By the way, since you use the Blue Sky speakers, maybe you could share your views on mixing with a sub. I've been shying away from it since my room doesn't seem like it would resonate well with it. Besides, I don't have a good place to put it, it should be centered, right?. I've also heard differing opinions and philosophies. I've been using speakers with 8s in them for a long time but have often toyed with the idea of a sub and the Blue Sky system looks like a contender. Thanks,Mazz

Thanks for the info Gunter! I've got it and will digest it as I can.I've known that I need some bass trapping for a while and haven't made the leap yet. This may be the kick in the butt I need! Thanks,Mazz
