Am I missing something ? Regarding 80's return.
I got a return on this instrumental. I was going for a more pop sound mix between Glen Fry and Van Halen's " Finish What you started "
The explanation was ;" A little too electronic-based compared to the references. "
There are no sequencers, only guitar, bass, drums and organ. The drums are ezd nashville which is very organic sounding.
I'm okay with it being returned because it's too light or whatever, but I'm not getting the electronic thing.
Especially when they use Billy Idol as a reference.
The instrumental is called " Bring on the heat "
Thanks for the input.
Rich.

Hey Rich,
I tried to get to your page but was unable to. I'll try again tomorrow. I'm in the same boat as you, confused about a return!

I do hear the nod to Heat is On in your track Bring On The Heat. Evident when you mention it, I've would have missed it otherwise.
Yes, the statement " A little too electronic-based compared to the references. " is interesting.
But; The most important is that It does not sound _right to the screener compared with the reference tracks.
The screener use the words 'electronic-based' and not 'electronic sounding'. I don't know if that is significant.
One guess would be that the rhythmic feel of the track was closer to some techno and synth based acts of the 80s.
I don't think particularily so myself though.
To me the one thing that stands out as different than reference artist tracks is the rhythm guitar playing those 8th notes.
It is very dominating in the mix. It could even be that a screener associate that with some rigid electronic arrangements of the period. Although even Kraftwerk has more syncopations and pushes than there are here.
(Maybe make the 8ths in the bass, make the heavy syncopated chords much more dominating and or make the gtr in question muted and much less dominating. I would have liked the drums fatter too. But, hey, this is just my twisted thoughts - and beyond what you were seeking advise on. I really think you know what you are doing and may not have any use for opinions on other things. I am not comfortable with 80s rock and did not submit)
I tend to get returns without any comments. Sometimes not even any box checked Then I don't have to wonder about why.

Re: Am I missing something ? Regarding 80's return.
Hey Rich,
I gave "Bring on the Heat" a listen and I am a bit perplexed at the sounding too electronic thing... although there are times when the drums strike me as... ok, that sounds fake there... ok they are good again... now fake... now good... if ya follow me. Also that organ sound just isn't 80s... not of any of the a la's mentioned that I am aware of anyway BUT they did say, not limited too...
It's a tough call but it doesn't strike me as the a la's mentioned. My song "Tattle Tale" on my Taxi page was returned and that sounds 80s to me. But what can ya say?... /shrug. Some strike the screener as good and others don't and then MAYBE they tell us why. If the screener says it sounds electronic then that was the key thing in his/her mind, then that's what they felt. MY GUESS is... with the drums sounding fake at times and the more 70s-blues-ish sounding synth it must have struck him/her that way. Possibly they are using the term electronic as equating to fake sounding here... perhaps...
Like I said, my song "Tattle Tale" was rejected but they forwarded "Flying" and "Trading Fire" At least they told you why... I just got returned with the music box checked... lol. My guess is it didn't sound 80s to him/her... sure sounds it to me... lol
Good Luck in the future!!!
Rob

Thanks for the comments guy's.
The 8th note thingy is common with AC/DC and Van Halen. I did it to give it movement and it probably was taken out of context. The keyboards are more 60/70's sounding. I agree with that.
I should have gone heavier...next time

That "electronic" comment is very puzzling, maybe (as suggested), they mean it sounds a bit processed, I dunno, tricky!
I would say, that upon listening to it, it didn't evoke a feeling of the 80's, and I suppose that's very hard to define. Then again, I'm not a screener!
