Your analysis of the Foo Fighters song is spot on. Grohl is an incredible singer and infuses incredible emotion into his songs.

I also liked your analysis of contrast using Katy Perry's Firework as an example. BTW, you don't need to find any excuse to like that song, it's great, with a positive sentiment. I'd like to see you do a post using an example where vocal range is NOT used to create contrast between verse and chorus.

I host a podcast dedicated to analyzing hit songs. I'm going to link to your blog as a resource. Keep up the great work.

My life long quest is to find out what makes music sound good....aesthetic.

I don't deal with lyrics....just the music.

One theory is melodic contour.....which is the shape of the melody.

Instead of having a melody go straight up or down; this theory suggests that a zig zag shape is more aesthetic.
Success is failure analyzed

Sometimes the truth feels good. Sometimes bad. But it's always good for us.

The world's greatest music was written without the technology we have today.

Hey, What's up Anthony?
Cool blog. Good stuff. You may want to consider analyzing the production of a song as well. Being in the production business, I'm constantly on YouTube, analyzing the hit songs currently on the charts, and figuring what they're doing in the production to grab the listeners attention and to make the song interesting. In the Pop / R&B hits, you really have to pay attention to catch all the little intricacies the big money producers are putting into it. You also get a grasp on how things are spaced out, what effects are being used on vocals, and what sound patches are current (versus the sound patches they were using in the 80s & 90s that many of us are still trying to use in our songs. lol).

Hey Neil - great point. That sentiment was definitley hammered into me this weekend at the classes I took at the Rally... I'll look into that!
