Mic- I do not use ANY reverb on my guitars. I use PT10 running thru a Profire 2626 preamp. Using Slate Digital FGX Mastering software. When I do the guitars I use a KSM32 and SM57 mics. The 57 close and the ksm32 for the far mic. Pan the close mic Hard left and right and the far mic about 2 oclock l and right. I use just the 57 close on guitar overdubs and leads.

On the tuning issues.. what exactly is out??

Jason,

This is a good track, but I have to agree with the others that the timing is absolutely killing it for me. The palm-muted guitars in the verse are a mile away from the drums, and the bass is far enough to be distracting, too. Don't be afraid to time-correct to tighten this stuff up. You'd be amazed at the amount of extra power and impact you can get from just having everything super-tight. (Nailing the spot right after the drop at 2:31 would make it more powerful, too.)

As for the tuning, the lead guitar that's slightly right-panned (at 1:02 and other places) is a little out. The bends in the lead just before the break are a little wonky, too.

If it were me, though, I'd time-correct the bass and re-record the rhythm guitars with a little less gain: they seem a little mushy to me. (Or if you don't want to re-record, try a little bump around 3.5kHz or so, and a small cut in the low-mids around 250Hz: I find that it cleans up muddy guitars.)

Again, I really do think the song is a pretty killer hard-rocker, but the timing and a little muddiness in the mix is holding it back.

Mic - as far as mixing goes. I mostly use focusrite forte isa 110 channel strip and some outboard gear. But the 110 channel strip is my go to.

Will work on the timing on this one also guys. And see what i can do about the tuning.

Regarding the verse you need to lock onto the kick and snare. Your chugging riffs lends itself to that
and you will find the mix will tighten up and sound better.
The tuning is unfortunate. the only way to fix that is to redo it.

Rich.

Alrighty... Made some of what I hope sounds like improvements to you guys today.

1. Corrected timing issue.
2. Took a little mud out of the rhythem guitars.
3. Done my best to tend to the tuning issue. (The best i could do aside from doing a retracking session)

Hey Jason,

I think this is a definite improvement. The timing is much better in the verses, and I think the whole track gels a little better as a result. There are still a few spots in the verse where I feel like you're stumbling a little bit, though, where everything isn't locked down tight. I don't have time to listen more than once right now, but I think it felt like the bass was ahead of the kick a little too much. I still think it's a better production, but I really do think there's something to be said for really locking to a grid (or at least close to one).

Hey Jason
That is an improvement, but I'm afraid that rhythm guit is still not locking in the verses.
At least I think its the guit. I'm assuming these are not live drums, but I can't tell for sure anymore.
If so they are probably locked to a grid. Listening as carefully as I can, It sounds like the bass and drum tracks are locking OK,
and feels like the beat does not drift when I clap along, so I'm thinking it must be just the guit. Can you post a quick mix of just the verse section with the guit muted? That would clear it up for sure.
I really like the tune though man- see this through, it's worth it!
Cheers -Rob
