adding midi tracks takes up insignificant amounts of cpu. it's the multiple instances of VSTi's that take up cpu. in this case, you would use multiple midi tracks to trigger the same instance of battery. on top of the hihats, you can add additional midi tracks to play whatever else, tom fills, crash etc..
I have so much to learn...
I do have the drums set to multiple outputs etc...
What I've done is copy a 8 bar drum loop and make changes ( paint/piano mode ) to give the drums sections variety and accents.
It works well but it's time consuming, which is probably unavoidable. ;)

Owen, thank you for this post! This works so much better for me than multiple instances or routing the channels from BFD or Ultrabeat.

I've been hearing good things about Battery, lately. Will check it out.

Jerry

Rich: yah it can be a bit tedious. In time, if you haven't gotten a good handle on how the rhythm translates to 1/4, 1/8th, 1/16th notes etc already, it'll become second nature in time. Now, I'd much rather paint it out than play it, cuz copying/pasting notes is so much faster than sitting through 4 or 8 bars.

Jerry: Glad I could help! And that goes for any vst, if u need to save cpu. Definitely check out battery. I love it for drums, especially using my own libraries.

Well I got it(K8) on the way. After the rally I realzed having cutting edge software gives you a cutting edge! Stylus is next! Anybody know of something like it that is not as pricey? I usually create my own grooves but Stylus looks so easy.

Stylus, Trilian and Omnisphere integrate very well together; you learn one interface, and you're good to go. (just add guitars, horns and sampled symphony, heh) :D Adding Komplete and EastWest's QLSO makes for a pretty good basic toolbox, imo.
