Is anyone here a member of The Recording Academy (Home of the Grammys)? In addition to TAXI, what other music organizations, and online forums do you belong to that you enjoy and recommend joining? Thanks, Cher

I was for years, but have only recently let my membership expire. And, oddly enough ('cause I didn't really find much in the way of 'practical, day-to-day' benefits to the money I put out every year for member dues OTHER than the right to vote on the Grammies), I'm suddenly missing it.But, as per your question, this is the ONLY online forum/community I bother with... It's the only one where I find that there really IS a sense of suppport and community.Ted

Hi Ted! I'm new there...I lived in LA but now live in the Midwest and the closest Rec. Ac. chapter is Chicago (8 hours from me). There are some fantastic musicians here in Nebraska, but I'd still like to stay connected online with as many musicans as possible - I'm so glad I found this site! Are you missing the Recording Academy enough to rejoin? Cher

Confusion; we mean NARAS, don't we? What are the dues these days, anybody know, offhand? (My google finger's sprained.)

It used to be NARAS back in the day.I belong to the Pacific NW chapter and they have some good activities, almost always in Seattle. Getting to meetings in Seattle from Portland is a three hour drive but is worth doing a couple of times a year. Taxi is a better investment for me but I plan to keep my membership.

(My google finger's sprained.)I was a member back in the mid 80's but like Ted I let my membership expire. After I stopped releasing records I really didn't see the benefits of continuing with them. The current fee is $100 per year. Here's their link:http://www.grammy.com/

Thanks all! When you were members, did you ever submit your recordings for the Grammy process? We just did it - it was pretty painless cuz it's all online and they walk you through the steps pretty clearly, but it really was kind of exciting - my hands were sweating the whole time and I had butterflies in my tummy!!! eeek!!!! I know it's a longshot too, but I am really glad we at least submitted. Cher

It was totally different when I was still living in San Francisco, and it was only a simple bus ride over to the chapter's SFO offices. But where I'm living now, the closest chapter is L.A. And I truly found that MOST of the benefits of membership were the classes and support meetings they held at the offices. But, just for the super-cool ego stroke...there was nothing so groovy as knowing that MY opinions helped to decide who won the Grammy. THAT, I truly miss.

Ted, Hee-hee That is a Waaay cool ego stroke !!!! Didn't even think about that end of it ... that'll be fun!! Chicago is 8 hours from here by mini-van, Nash is 12 and LA is a plane ticket...I get back to LA occasionally, but am rarely in Chicago - the meetings would be cool. What took you to New Mexico?Cher

My serious need to break my crystal meth habit. (I've been here 3.5 years now.) Plus, I had lived here before back in the late 80's/early 90's and knew how much I loved this place. I had old friends still living here, and it all combined to make this a pretty easy decision. And I've never looked back.
