Anyone tried the new Waves H-Reverb? Thoughts?

Post by becw75 » Sun May 17, 2015 4:21 am

Hi

What are people's thoughts on the Waves H-Verb compared to the other Waves reverbs?

I thought it might be a good time to buy with introductory discount.
I'm still using my crappy Protools Air reverb. :)

I don't know about H-reverb but H-Delay is one of my favorite plugs, I use it all the time, even over Echoboy for certain things!

remember there is D-verb in Pro Tools as well as the AIR reverb.

D-verb isn't sexy but its purely functional.

I sure H-verb is cool (haven't bought it) as I am with EO that the H-delay has some great sounds (as long as you turn off the analog noise  )

but if you are wanting some top-notch reverbs you might look around a bit first (and this is coming from somebody who somewhat foolishly has spent a lot on plugins):

here are some that are worth a look:

Softube TSAR http://www.softube.com/index.php?id=tsar1

Native Instruments RC24 http://www.native-instruments.com/en/pr ... cts/rc-24/ and RC48 http://www.native-instruments.com/en/pr ... cts/rc-48/ and a review of same http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun13/a ... assics.htm

Lexicon Native reverbs http://lexiconpro.com/en-US/products/pc ... -in-bundle and the economy version of same http://lexiconpro.com/en-US/products/lx ... -in-bundle

Altiverb http://www.audioease.com/Pages/Altiverb/

and there are many others..... like the https://www.112db.com/redline/reverb/ and http://www.soundsonline.com/Spaces and various ones from overloud http://www.overloud.com/products.php and Ik multimedia http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/csr/

and then there are a few that are really cool and much less $$$

Valhalla https://valhalladsp.com

If you are feeling the itch to continue blowing through a stack of dough there are also a lot of great reverbs available on the UAD platform (but you have to buy a UA hardware accelerator to run them):

http://www.uaudio.com/store.html

I have several - the LX224, the EMT 250, EMT 140 are great.

you will see some of the same numbers coming up again and again and some of these plugins all emulate the same digital reverb, the Lexicon 224.

anyways......

The H Reverb looks incredible
I have been watching the promotional videos and their sounds are very tweak -able.
Once you expand the plug it reveals a myriad of knobs which enable creativity through reverb sound shaping.
Of course they list a lot of producers and mixers who love this reverb.

I know there are a lot of great reverb units plugs out there but they make this one exciting.
and it is on sale

Decision time..........

Thanks guys.
I notice the lexicon one costs a bit and by Harman.

Looks like it's good for electronic music styles. From Gear Sluts…
I have most of the ITB reverb plugins and was really not expecting to be wowed or even interested in H-Reverb, but I installed the demo and put it through a couple hours of shootouts, today.

The Dark GUI is easy on the eyes.
It sounds great, but that's not the real appeal, for me. It's all about the insane modulation options.
They are all exposed via automation and stay smooth and artifact-free.
For those who are into minimal electronic style genres, H-Reverb is a one-stop techno shop.
If you're familiar, you know the effect techniques I'm talking about; automating tail length, mix level, etc. during the build ups.
With H-Reverb, automating things like "Build Up" and the LFO Q and Mix parameters has the potential to be foundation of an entire song.
I haven't been this inspired by an effect plugin since D16's Sigmund.
As one example, simply automating Build Up param can create that drifting, syncopated, almost polyrhythmic, or shifting "offbeat" effect one hears in techno genres.
Here's a quick test...
http://jalcide.com/downloads/H-Rever...stMastered.aif

It's a basic 125 BPM techno kick, hi-hat and some top end percussion run through H-Reverb with automation on Build Up, LFO Q (set to 16th note sync) and its Mix, plus a small bit of automation on the Reverb Time.

also in addition to that, the site:

http://www.audiodeluxe.com

always offers 10-15% off the manufacturers discounted price. So at times when Waves has been selling a certain plugin for $X.XX you get it cheaper on Audiodeluxe.com even when its a huge fire sale for $49.

the H-reverb is available on their site right now for $170.95.

You won't see the discount until you create a free account and log in. And I swear I don't get a kickback for advertising for them

In other news.....

I sat through the demo that Yoad Nevo did on this reverb, and I have to say I am very impressed.

the modulation section didn't really knock me out very much (seemed like a one trick pony but I can see that someone could get very creative with it)

but the models of the various legacy reverbs (there is that 224 again) were pretty cool, and the range of controls with both the frequency dependent damping and multi band eq and especially the buildup AND pre-delay functions make it mighty versatile.

Again, these are mostly things you can effect by having compressors, noise gates, transient designers and eq plugs before and after a conventional reverb, but there is something to be said for ease of use.
