Authentic Sounding 50s 60s 70s?

Post by paults » Mon Nov 12, 2007 6:39 am

There are several "period piece" listings that mention "sound like they were lifted straight out of" each era.Not to second guess the specific language, but does that mean rolled off highs, distant micing, etc for the 50s and 60s? "Coffee table" dry sounding toms for the 70s? Or, do they really just want material without 80s and later digiital sounds and obvious effects?

Usually this means, WHATEVER it takes to sound like it really came from that time period. That would apply to EVERYTHING about it including the production techniques. When people ask for period pieces they usually want replacements for the real songs of that era since licensing the real tracks would cost too much. So, maybe they have a 60's Doors song only as a placeholder during the early production stages. Now they need something else that will work in that spot. If it sounded like it was produced with year 2000+ techniques, it probably wouldn't work.BTW, for all those reading... Having music that sounds "dated" is not necessarily a problem for film/TV pitching as long as it is easily recognizable as a song that could have come from a specific time period. Casey
