Band in a Box
I bought the software program, "Band in a Box." I don't play an instrument so I thought this would be better than nothing for making background music for songs. What is your opinion of this software? If I put enough time into it, will I be able to produce songs in a quality that can be forwarded and accepted here at Taxi or is this just wishful thinking?

In my experience, it MIGHT be okay for a demo - providing it doesn't sound too mechanical or cheesy. What it will do, however, is give you the opportunity to make a worktape of your song and get it critiqued - something I recommend before spending any money on demos anyway. The software has improved over the years. All you can do is try

Re: Band in a Box
I have the program. It has some good features, especially if you want to write songs at your desktop without an instrument. You can simply type in chord names measure by measure, set a tempo and style, and let it go. However, like most programs, it takes a bit of work to learn it. The manual is a huge document. The sound produced will have that MIDI sound so it will only be good for rough demos. But having a chord structure to sing with isn't bad. Personally, I need to use my guitar. One feature disappointed me. You are supposed to be able to import a song such as a commercial recording and it will give you the chords. Great in theory, but most of the chords come out way off. And I mean off in big ways... Minors instead of majors and vice-versa, chords that are way out of the key, etc, etc... I even tried it with some simple recordings- just rhythm guitar, no bass or anything that might confuse the program. I still got bad results. However, this isn't what most people buy it for. There is a free demo version you can download and try. I recommend doing that to see what you think. The free demo is full featured except you can't save your work to a file. Casey
