Re: Best computer (touchscreen?) for DAW?
I just read a review in TapeOp (anyone else a reader/subscriber to this great FREE magazine?) that talked about a really great iPad app for recording multitrack.
Here's a link to the review. Looks pretty awesome. http://www.tapeop.com/reviews/92/auria- ... -for-ipad/

I have cubase on a touch screen and for sure you dont want it. Or any DAW on a touch screen, unless the screen is like 3 feet wide or something.
I only use it for an extra keyboard at church so i dont touch it much.

Thanks, Dwayne! That settles it then - between you and the other guys' advice - no touch screen. Now if i could find a quiet desktop that doesn't cost $1200! I'm kind of scared of HP's and Dells based on research on the web (loud, maybe a graphic card won't allow 2 monitors, etc), and i read that maybe Asus or Lenovo is free of bloatware, which would be nice. Something from StudioCat or ADK would probably be great, and you get musician-specific support and a computer that works, but the specs are lower than what you can get elsewhere and the cost seems to be $1,200 or higher (I'd like to spend less than $1,000 including the monitor)... but I'm probably overthinking it, lol.

I build all mine. If you can do that then that is how you get the best for the cheapest. Use Asus boards for sure. use corse air power. And of course use intel chips. Get those components and you should be ok.tylerdurden8us wrote:Thanks, Dwayne! That settles it then - between you and the other guys' advice - no touch screen. I think under $1000 is doable.

Re: Best computer (touchscreen?) for DAW?
I am running Cubase 6.07 on a Toshiba laptop for portability. Dual core, 4 meg memory and it works fine and is stable. When I want to SEE the screen I just plug it into my Vizio TV. I use the Steinberg CI-2 for a controller/input device and an Akai MPK mini keyboard for midi. I use some really nice headphones - DT 770 Beyerdynamic. My whole studio fits in a travel bag.
What I like is that every three years I just have to shell out only $400 or so for a new laptop. Since Cubase is designed for key assigns a touch screen is out IMHO. A good mouse is essential though. Large capacity thumbdrives are so cheap now, I don't bother with external hard drives to store projects.
Cables are still a pain to maintain and have the correct ones as needed.
