Bob Dylan Soundalikes "I'm Not There"

Post by leejohnson » Mon Mar 10, 2008 6:24 pm

Hi there Taxi Forum Friends,Here is my attempt at the Bob Dylan sound alike Dispatch listing #D080311BD. If you haven't heard the original "I'm Not There", take a listen first please. I'm a big fan of Dylan, yet this one's a little "quirky". I am making my best attempt at re-creating that vibe for this listing's specifications. Anyway this was fun. Let me know your thoughts and feedback please. Here is the listing, then lyric, and then link to my version:Listing:BOB DYLAN SOUNDALIKES, specifically "I'm Not There", are needed by an LA based Music Publisher who has tons of Film/TV credits and placements. Again, he's not looking for a cover of that song specifically, but an original that captures the essence of that song- lyrically, melodically and sonically. This is for a specific film placement, so the Bob Dylan song/artist reference should be followed carefully. Great performances are an absolute must. This publisher will work with artists on a 50/50 split basis for the master rights to the song. The company's president will screen the submissions. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. As always, we will notify everyone via e-mail, whether your submissions have been Forwarded or Returned. Submissions must be received no later than 4pm, Pacific Standard Time (California time), Tuesday, Mar. 11, 2008. TAXI # D080311BDHere is the lyric I came up with:I Can’t See Her(V1) She Says she’s alright, she’s hangin out in my neighborhoodShining in the light, as she wept I could see herIt’s one of those times, she don’t always feel fineShe says she’s feeling lonelyIts hard but I can’t lie, I can see her(CH)And I believe that she loves him if she could only careI believe that she feels like life was more fairI would leave her aloneBut she keeps coming back, I can’t see her(V2)I don’t belong in the city, don’t belong out in the woodsI see her beauty, everywhere I lookShe’s a gypsy soul, never restingI can’t help her forever, she’ll have to learn on her ownShe’s like a child in her mind, she’ll have to carry onAnd I know when she leaves me I can’t be there(CH2)Only God above has the answer for herLike the clouds she drifts by without a careAnd I look for her to shineBut she doesn’t seem to mind, that I can’t see her(V3)So I’ll hang my head low, let sorrow wash me downAnd I stare into her steely eyes and feel the savior’s frownAnd I know that it’s real but I can’t see herI was made for no one else yet she’ll go on without meAs heavan lies above, I try to keep upIt’s a fast pace and I can’t be there(CH3)And I’m on my way, like a ship gone from the docksAnd as time passes by, I hear the ticking of the clocksIt’s a tragedy of love, I don’t care if she knows or notBut I can’t see her, no I can’t see her(end lyric)Here is the link to my version on my taxi site:http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... am=1Thanks for your thoughts and feedback. Hey Lee, I gotta say that this sounds EXACTLY like the Dylan version. I would think that the only problem might be that it's the same melody & that might be considered an infringement. If not & they wanted I'm Not There with different lyrics then this is it for sure! Please let me know how this turns out for you, if it's forwarded it'll be a good lesson on how close we can copy -I also submitted for this. I tried to get the "vibe" but didn't copy the original song as well as you. here's mine -http://www.billgaunce.com/song/0

Hi Bill, thanks for your reply....nice song I like it. You have more of a vocal similarity with Dylan for sure than I do, and I think your song definitely has a more general "like Dylan" sound. The original version of "I'm not There" was a little off the beaten path of what I am used to hearing from him. LOL. I did make sure I had some small chord and melody changes in mine but was going for a version as close as possible, as the listing sounded very specific. Lets keep in touch and see how this one pans out as it will be a valuable learning experience either way it goes. Cheers!

Hey Bill I can't agree you there...How can sounding like Bob Dylan be a bad thing? especially for this listing I read that Jimi Hendrix started singing when he figured : If Bob Dylan can sing , why can't I ? ''...Lucky for us all he did ! cheers !MG

Hi Harry, mine was forwarded . . . BUT it's not gonna be placed. Ironically just about 20 min. ago I received an email from the company that ran the listing to let me know that the film company passed on my tune. Pretty strange, I've never received an actual rejection notice in regards to a forward not being placed. That's pretty nice . . . (I think??!!)

That IS a good thing...at least now you won't wonder if....This did happen to me once also, a few years ago...I'd prefer knowing so I can stop hoping for something that won't happen.I wonder how Lee Johnson made out with his submittal...Harry
