Boss DR880 drum machine...any views?
Hi all. I am new to the forum and hope this isn't a silly question but here goes.
Does anyone use a Boss DR880 drum machine in their recordings?
I haven't gone down the laptop/DAW route yet (still using the Boss and an old Yamaha AW16G to record) and I wonder what the general opinion of the Boss is, i.e. whether the sounds are still considered valid/good to work with?
Appreciate any feedback.
All best/Steve

I guess it all depends on the genre you're workin' on.

Hi Steve
I use the boss 770 for 90% of all my songs.
It is simple to use. I don't however think it is anywhere as good as the midi stuff out there.
You can hear my songs at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... dID=883613
Good luck
Sincerely
Paul

Those are styles I work in, and I don't think I'd want to work with any hardware box I've ever heard, after being spoiled by Addictive Drums software. Because of design and tooling cycles and other manufacturing limitations, software drum development has simply far outpaced that of drum machines and even drum brain/modules for electric kits. It certainly helps that I can trigger a great software instrument with pads, so as to maintain a very natural feel, but even considering sound alone, virtual drum instruments are hands down winners in terms of realism, even when triggered by MIDI loops. Combined with MIDI loops played on trigger kits, like those available from companies like Groove Monkee, the only way to beat 'em is with a live drummer on a real kit with a great room and a bunch of great mics, cables, signal processors, time...and all the attendant expense.
Here's an example of what Addictive Drums can do, when paired with a really sophisticated trigger system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 3usNsUiiDY

I have to concur. If you were doing Hip-Hop, it would be great to use (occasionally) like a retro thing.mojobone wrote:Those are styles I work in, and I don't think I'd want to work with any hardware box I've ever heard, after being spoiled by Addictive Drums software.
Addictive Drums is excellent.
