Bossa Nova for Dispatch -- rough draft

Post by teleblaster » Sat Jan 15, 2011 4:42 pm

Here's the listing:
AUTHENTIC SOUNDING BOSSA NOVA INSTRUMENTALS in the wide range a la Luiz Bonfa, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tamba Trio, Bebel Gilberto, etc. urgently needed by the Owner of a Music Production Library for use in film/TV/commercials. This production music veteran has signed dozens of TAXI writers to his previous company, and has had considerable success in creating some of the most successful music libraries in the industry. The purest form of this Brazilian genre is typically stripped down, with acoustic guitar being the primary instrument, but an underlying piano and percussive element can be added for a bit of spice. The key words here are AUTHENTIC SOUNDING! They said, and we quote, "All tracks submitted would need to be at least 2 minutes in length. No key changes. Must have composed endings - no fade-outs." This company offers a standard exclusive deal. Great performances are essential. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received by 10:00 am (PST) on Thursday, January 20, 2011.

Here's the rough draft I made this afternoon: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10129099 Rainy Day Bossa Nova -- Drums On Demand drum and percussion loops, my old (circa 1974) C 124 Takamine nylon string guitar, and a Rob Allen Fretless Electric Acoustic bass (borrowed from a good friend of mine). I'm off to catch the rest of the A$$ whoopin the Raven's are givin' the Steelers. Give me some feedback and I'll post something up on yer thread; K?

Hey Erich...nice work...I can't really comment on Bossa because Taxi has returned all my Bossa submissions so I apparently don't know anything about the genre BUT

the mix seems a little bass heavy. Other than that I was under the impression that most Bossa was really laid back - which your track is not.

Good luck and nice nylon sound. I'm impressed.

I like what you have going on here, the rythm and style is consisten w/ what I heard on YouTube -- but this actually brings up a question.. the text for the listing indicates "no key changes" -- however, are there fundamental changes in the key which is made obvious by the bass-line.. Is my interpretation of a key change correct? Sorry if I confuse you -- just trying to help.. I thought no key change meant you stay on the same tone the whole time.. or maybe I am confusing "key" with "chord"..?

I'll settle for 5 minutes instead of 15.

end vic's quote

yes I'd say this is a bit of a contradiction....All of the Jobim compositions I'm familiar with utilize chromaticism - which by definition is not diatonic. I've always thought that the genre has much in common with Wagner or Berg - at least harmonically. For that matter just about all jazz standards modulate...or maybe that's just a bit of music ON another key rather than IN another key. I don't know. Maybe I'm confused....Maybe what they don't want is a 'Mack The Knife' kind of phrase modulation.

??? anybody?

Excellent catch guys. Man am I glad I posted this for review and some sharp people took a listen for me. This track most definitely modulates. It's the classic Cmaj, Cmin thingy, but it's a key change any way you look at it. But, as stated, most authentic Bossa's do. This merits a call to TAXI. I might start a thread on the Listings forum here too.

Great track! I hope the key change thing doesn't screw you up. The only thing I thought could be worked on was the low-mids in the bass, sounds a little too heavy. Oh, and the name . . .sounds to "up" for a rainy day song, give it a happy name!

'key', (since Beethoven) might mean major + minor relating to a single tonic so - take any key - Like "A" ...then the chords relating to it might include:

A, A7 (V of IV), Am, Bb (Neopolitan 6th), Bm, B dim, B7 (V of V), C (bIII) C#m, D, Dm, E, E7, E+, Em, F, F#m, G, G#dim.

Thanks Bill,
Good call on the bass tone; it's a bit mushy. . ya, the title was the first thing that came to mind looking out the window middle of Jan. in the Seattle area...

I hope you're right kitchensink. It's a pretty smooth modulation. Still gonna call TAXI on Monday, and create another one that's completely diatonic.

Hey Erich...

Cool tune... can't comment on genre but there seemed to me to be something a little off in the guitar from .55-1.10 secs... maybe an off note??? or syncopation?? Then again since the therory discussion above goes above my head use a grain of salt here...

Cool vibe!!!

Peace, Geo
