Broadcast Quality Comments , please

Post by brendanlynch » Fri Jan 30, 2009 11:46 am

Hi All,I had two tracks returned with no comment other than the 'recording' boxes ticked under the 'Not Master/Broadcast' heading for each track. I'm therefore going to assume that the tracks were musically on target for the required posting, but I'd like to establish what other members regard as 'broadcast quality'. Considering that most of the postings indicate that home recordings should be fine, it's getting a little confusing. The songs are here:Invincible - http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... am=trueThe Challenger - http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... am=trueThe process is incredibly unhelpful with so little feedback provided. I looked at articles regarding quality of submitted music, but can't really establish anything until someone can point out to me where these apparently fell short in terms of recording quality.ThanksBrendan

hey Brendan,It sounds like you submitted to a Y/N listing, and if so, those listings don't get the full length critiques. And actually, they only started using the mini-critiques this year. Prior to that, if you submitted to a Y/N and you didn't get forwarded, you didn't get any additional info.Could you post the listing that you submitted these to? That would help provide some context. - Big Blue

I really like Invincible. After listening to both tracks I'm gonna have to say that I think the screener might have checked the wrong box by mistake. This isn't my genre but I think they sound fine, I'm sure someone else will chime in that's more familiar with what the listing required.

It was a Y listing, and yes, I agree with your comments on how they provide (or rather don't provide) critiques for Y listings. Considering that nothing else was checked, I guess they were musically OK for the listing. But I'm really lost as to why they didn't make the 'recording' grade. This was the listing:MODERN, HYBRID ELECTRONIC/ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTALS are needed by an established Music Licensing company who provides content for major clients including Toyota, AOL, Google, Visa, Xbox, Adidas and more. They'll want to hear mid to uptempos for this one - no ambient or chill-out tracks, please! High energy and an engaging blend of Electronica and Orchestral elements will be crucial for this one. Solid performances/production and excellent recordings will be necessary - recordings need to be Broadcast Quality. Please submit 1-3 original instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than January 19, 2009. TAXI #Y090119IN

(Although I didn't listen all the way thru). You did however make them fade out at the end of the recordings. That's usually NOT a great idea. I'd call the office and ask for some more clarity.

Hey Brendan,"Invincible" has a pretty good groove. To me the production is fine except that the horn section sounds very midi/synthy. An alternative approach is to make them sound really unique and un-brass like rather than point out that your brass patches are inferior. Both pieces are pretty much electronica. Not really hybrid orchestral pieces. That may be why they were rejected. My feeling is that they wanted music more on the orchestral side with elements of electronica. Just my opinion. They probably just checked the wrong box, too.Nice work, though. I'm sure these will find a home in other electronica listings.Steve

Hey Brendan, I finally heard your tracks (i had to go to my MAC, apparently the explorer can't stream from taxi) anyway, "the challenger" is a fantastic song!!! that one should've gone thru... hope you can hear my tracks... still.. i found a thread where a guy did got his tracks forward http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... read=11954 and i can see that the difference between our tracks and his, is that he keeps his "orchestral instruments" way in the back and with lots of rvb... i might guess that gives it a little more "realistic feel" i don't know.... i'd like to hear your opinion...

I like both tunes but then this is some of the stuff I like anyway. Recording quality sounds ok to me. Both tunes have an engaging blend of electronica but I don't really hear any orchestra blended in and I don't really get HIGH ENERGY out of either piece. But then I think of raging, thundering rock n roll bands for that... I think they were just wrong for the listing and maybe the screener checked the wrong box. Your production is there!Keith

Hi Brendan;'Invincible' has no orchestral elements at all. There is an electronic sounding brass patch, however.'The Challenger' has light string accompaniment but the orchestral instruments are underutilized. Try featuring more of the orchestra and give them more interesting parts. Hope this helps, your friendly screener #173.
