Re: Building a studio computer
NickPro Tools recommends it in the steps to streamline a system for better performance. I can ask them about it since you don't know. It takes awhile to set up but after that it shouldn't be an issue.Nomi

My computer is working great, by the way. I'll post a song soon. Thanks sincerely to all of you for your help researching it. Between you and the Pro Tools forum, my cousin managed to build an excellent computer for a third of the cost. THANKS!!!!!!

Here's the first song from the new system. Let me know what you think.http://www.nomiyah.com/dashboard/avgall ... p3COULDN’T WALK AWAY(Words & music by Nomi Yah)Verse 1I don’t believe I was naïveWhen I believed our love was trueLife is like a libraryYou’re always learning something newYou did me wrong, I’d be long goneConsidering what you put me throughI made a choice and right or wrongDepends upon your point of viewChorusI couldn’t walk, walk away from youI couldn’t walk, walk away from youVerse 2I had to think about day in, day outThe times they really flewSweet as notes I blow in holes I madeIn flutes made of bambooFriends of mine are asking whyI am not using my I.Q.How can they guess the way I’m blessedTo be a part of me and youChorusI couldn’t walk, walk away from youI couldn’t walk, walk away from youCouldn’t walk away, couldn’t walk awayBridgeI had to stay, I had to stayI could see no other wayTo be happy in a big wide lonely landA man with no woman, a woman with no manLove is happiness and my obsessionLack or loss thereof will cause depressionChorusI couldn’t walk, walk away from youI couldn’t walk, walk away from youCouldn’t walk away, couldn’t walk awayThis song is a rewrite after I got lots of feedback from Taxi screeners and industry people. The most common critique I heard was there were too many words, there should be a bridge, and the chorus should be more contrasting. So that's what I did. Here's the original if interested in comparing. Do you think the rewrite is better? Or the original?http://www.nomiyah.com/dashboard/avgall ... .MP3Lyrics: http://nomiyah.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=43

You're not forgotten -- I just want to have time to give a complete response...Hopefully I'll post more soon... Nomi,Okay – here’s some feedback. The quality sounds pretty good. Better than the original – more open and airy - though I like the vocal performance of the original better. There are some mix issues that I will address below, but it sounds like you have the tools to get a really good mix, just need some tweaking. This may sound like a laundry list, but I wanted to give you my impression of what you could work on.The hat sounds pretty thin – too much top and/or maybe too hot in the mix. Also it sounds like you have two drummers playing hats (or a drummer with several hands). Short hits on one side (maybe that’s a ride), closing in the middle (until it pans later) – hats and cymbals happening at the same time. Seems a little busy. The song doesn’t need that much action. The bass is a little boomy (try toning down the 200 to 400k range. Overall, some of the panning is pretty extreme and gives a somewhat unbalanced feel. Try only hard panning a few things, or letting delays or reverb fill the space around those things that are hard panned. The vocals could use some more compression and some sparkle. They kind of jump out rather than living in the mix. (though they are not mixed too hot, like in the first sample). Try adding some 10 to 12k eq. If you have two different compressors available, try adding one after another with each compressing some – often 2, each working slightly, will sound better than one slamming harder. The vocal fx sounds a little roomy or boxy – too much midrange. Try a more transparent hall or plate setting, maybe a shorter reverb time or little less reverb.I also would try compression on some individual things – like the lead sax, and a little (3db or so) on the overall mix.Like I said… it sounds like you have some good tools to work with – pull in a sample track of something in a similar style that you are working on and compare levels in the mix. Where do the hats and cymbals live – etc. You are definitely making progress!Regards,Aub
