Built From the Ground Up
Built From the Ground UpSpent ten slow miles drivin' behind two big wide loadsthey were haulin' halves of a house down my country roadthey pulled into the driveway just ahead of mineI heard they had that home set-up in two day's timeI recalled how dad cut no corners when he built our homespent all day when he cut the cornerstoneI watched him lay that stone when I was just a pupeverything dad made was built from the ground uphe cut the timber for the hardwood floorhandcarved the rack for the rifle above the doorbaptized me himself in his old moonshine tubI learned early that life should be built from the ground upwell, that new fella next door was just bein' neighborlywhen he asked me over for supper last weekhe had a fake brick mantel and fake logs in the hearthif you've never had the real thing you can't tell 'em aparthe left CSI on as he was sayin' gracethen served microwave meatloaf I couldn't tasteas I walked home past their storebought shrubsI thought how our old oak was built from the ground upand how ma grew all our meals in a garden out backhow dawn shined on the porch where the firewood was stackedhow dad taught me to mean the grace I said over my grubI learned early that life is built from the ground upnow I ain't sayin' the easy way is wrong or rightbut back in dad's day houses were matters of prideand I strolled a hilly path out past our homesaw robins on an oak cross near a mound of stoneswhen I knelt down it meant my heart was lookin' upcos those stones mean heaven is built from the ground up(c)2007 Robert George

Another killer lyric brotherman. Next time someone wants to collab, give me a call if you like and I'll make sure the melody, pre, and chorus smoke!bc
