Re: Calling all composer/guitarists attending the Rally
This session was great! Def needs to become a session in future rallies

Re: Calling all composer/guitarists attending the Rally
Thanks to all who showed up for our informal session.
I know I learned several things and I hope every one else did too.
Sent me a PM with your email address if you want the Craig Anderton PDF file I mentioned.
This idea of an informal session could potentially morph into a "real" session.

Hey Chuck,
It was great to finally meet you in person. My slack ass missed most of this get together and was wondering if it would be possible to do a little summary of some of the more interesting bits of info.
I also spoke to Big Blue about how he get's his guitar sound with virtual amps and he had some very interesting/detailed tidbits to share. I pretty much remember everything he said and will type that up and run it by him to fill in any of the missing blanks. It was bar time by that point and I'm sure I've got some of the details crossed.

PS. For those who have never met Chuck. He's a great jazz guitarist! I was very impressed.

Bryan,
Great to meet you as well. And, thanks for the kind comments.
The session was more a conversation than an actual presentation.
Maybe the folks who shared an idea can chime in and share in print what they shared in our little deal.

I really wanted to be there, but it coincided with the studio51 composer class!!
I wish I could have cloned myself so I didn't miss anything at the Rally..

Hey guys!
First off, hat's off to Chuck for the idea....very cool!
--Stuff a pillow in your open back speaker to get a beefier tone.
--Vox Valvetronix, pretty cheap, flexible amp...but replace the speaker with a better speaker. I use a Celestion Vintage. The original speaker is pretty cheap.
--For my Hawaiian music without a pedal steel, I bought some pedal steel strings and strung up an older tele with the grouping that would make the most sense for playing chords (I forget now)
If I think of more, I will be back!

That session was far too brief but we should keep the conversation going as a thread because I'm sure it could go on and on. Thanks Chuck for organizing it and by the way it was great meeting you!
Here's my tip of the day:
For a nice big, open, chimey tone record one part in standard tuning and play the same chords in an open tuning capo'ed up the neck somewhere (I usually use open G). Pan to taste, I usually go fairly wide, like 9 o'clock 3 o'clock. Voila! Big and open and harmonically rich.
Cheers!

Re: Calling all composer/guitarists attending the Rally
eeoo, right back at you! (and Bryan)
The tip I shared was the Nashville tuning. I bought an inexpensive Yamaha solid wood top acoustic and took off the normal six strings, bought a twelve string set and strung the guitar with the added six strings in a twelve string set. The result is a guitar with a normal E and B and the rest of the strings tuned up an octave. You do have to adjust the truss rod to compensate for less tension on the neck.
The Yamaha guitar I bought for $400 or so was on sale recently at GC for about $150.
This is another way to double an acoustic part and add that high end "shimmer"
Chuck
(you can never have too many options for guitar sounds
