Can I submit this?

Post by NancyK » Mon May 18, 2020 1:56 pm

I 100% wrote a song and own the copyright. Had it studio recorded with full band but have isolated the piano studio track on mp-3. I will want to submit it for a TAXI ad appropriate/piano only instrumental. I did not perform this recording. Can I still submit as full copyright owner to an appropriate ad? Used a remote keyboard player and studio owner says the studio musicians he uses NEVER sign releases as the players play on hundreds of recordings and just come and go. Can I still submit this song?

Nancy,
I would be afraid to pitch that without a work for hire agreement. I would get on airgigs or Fiverr and find a piano player that can copy the piano parts of that song. Should be pretty simple to mix it.
I used a piano player recently in Italy. Excellent job. You can hear him on my song "I Appreciate" on my Taxi pg. He was about $100-$125 and he did it overnight. Best of luck, John

@John P: I can't thank you enough for this solution. Didn't take long to mull this over and make a decision to move forward with your advice. I value your time and input. Sincerely, Nancy

No, you dont own the piano performance, and if they wont clear it, you are stuck with this as a demo/showcase only. Ofc you can still submit this to artist listings, that look for songs to record.

Another solution could be to get Toontrack EZ Keys, and program a good piano track with the software.

@Kolstad: It's disappointing the studio owner said I didn't need a release and frankly I didn't realize the ramifications of not having one down the road. I'm sure had it not been for this TAXI Forum and all the helpful input folks take time to offer I would be making some pretty costly mistakes by now. That said, I'm doing my homework in here to both learn everything I can and one day contribute back through future experiences. Thanks so much for your valuable response. Nancy
