It took all of 2 seconds. Using this old fashioned but effective method you have to leave your master bus "plugin free" and create an aux track for master processing of your track. The ref tracks go straight to the master where you can have monitoring/metering plugs that don't effect the audio.MBantle wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 9:56 am
It seems the Magic AB plugin is no longer available https://splice.com/plugins/7620-magic-a ... mple-magic
Pretty sure you can do it in several of the DAWs I've tried but YMMV
Can not get a single forward - need some feedback please

In Pro Tools you can do the way i described by using a second master fader for your bounce aux. Sometimes I use one sometimes I don't. Some sessions I sum to output 1 and 2 and bounce from there. You should normally be able to route any DAW imported reference tracks straight to the hardware outputs instead of the master buss with your plugins on.

Yeah it's a mixed bag, some sound better than others. They keys based jazzy stuff was better I felt. The Holiday songs...Your singer is pitchy as hell on Christmans in Your Town for example..the guitar sounds fake on Angels We have Heard etc.
I would steer away from VI's that can easily sound fake..like solo brass for example is hard to play well on keys. Every track I listened too sounded like the bass was mixed too loud - I don't know what acoustic treatment if any you use in your studio but the first rule is you can't mix it unless you can hear it so if the room isn't telling you the truth you need to look deeper into it.
I just feel you need to step everything up several notches. The writing, playing, arrangements and the mixing and production. The only way to do that really is do a lot of it - I've just rolled over 300 tracks now and my skills now are a lot better all round than on my first Taxi submission in 2016.
Referencing helps a lot. Having the right acoustics where you mix helps a lot. The book Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio helped me a lot. Singing lessons helped me a lot ( even though I don't sing on anything for licencing it really helped me to listen better to other vocalists and improve my pitch perception) . Keyboard lessons helped ( as I started out on guitar ) . Certain Youtube channels helped that are specific to producing the type of music I write i.e. EDM etc.
It's a journey really . You just gotta work through it I think and accept that it's the little incremental things over a period of time that will gradually seep in and you'll develop better habits.

I think Ozone was mentioned before. Its Tonal Balance Control is a very usable feature to check your mix (I do not have a great room but using Tonal Balance Control + a cheap 'Auratone' clone and a good pair of headphones does the job for me - as in: I never had a Return saying anything negative about my mix
).
Cheers,
Matt

Yes it's also good to use it to look at reference tracks and how they are balanced as wellMBantle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:09 pmI think Ozone was mentioned before. I also meant to say I have a 3 way monitor switch with the main monitors, a boom box and a mono Avantone Mixcube which is an Auratone clone. Each useful for certain things if you know how to use them correctly.

Mark - May I ask what boombox you are using? I'm in the market for one but all the stuff that has been featured in Youtube clips showing famous engineers' studios are sold out on Ebay (e.g. Michael Brauer's Sony etc..).cosmicdolphin wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:19 pmYes it's also good to use it to look at reference tracks and how they are balanced as wellMBantle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:09 pmI think Ozone was mentioned before. It's just an old one that my kids no longer used, it was originally a dock /boombox for an iPod Nano but they broke the iPod and then snapped the antenna off for the radio so I just commandeered it for the studio as it has an aux line input.MBantle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:47 pmMark - May I ask what boombox you are using? The brand is Gear4 - I have no idea of the model number.
I think this is the latest iteration https://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/ ... ker-system
It doesn't really matter on any particular make/model you just need something consumer grade with small speakers that has an input and get used to what it sounds like with commercial mixes.
