For live gigs the DBX 163x works great for a DI. It's cheap, rugged & has been used by a bazillion touring bass players that you've probably heard of.

it also works great as a compressor-pre going into your rig & I use it for DI recording bass in the studio too.

Fantastic for bass & it's cheap & easy to use.

Jim Williams (Audio Upgrades) does a mod on these which some have said makes it "a poor man's SSL", I don't know about that, but for bass DI they're good "as is".
