Recently I received an email via broadjam from someone in the US asking if they could get a CD of my stuff for placement in US sports programmes. They included an address and company name.I checked out the website but couldn't find their name on the site. The email was very casual. Is it common for placement companies to send such informal notes requesting music?I got my first record deal with a start-up label in a very similar fashion but didn't think the big boys would do it that way.Has anyone experienced anything similar?

53:I know folks this has happened to. Most of the time when people seek you out, it's a scam. But there are exceptions... If you PM me the name of the company, I'll tell you if I've heard of themCasey

Re: Casually contacted by a marketting company
I don't see any red flags yet. There's really only three ways any company can contact anyone and that is by email, mail, or telephone. I don't see email as being any more suspicious than the other two. When I contact companies, my order of preference is 1. Email, 2. Mail, and 3. Telephone (never done it).I like to always maintain an attitude I call "cautiously open minded". I've been trying to learn what a "red flag" is and what it isn't. Asking for a CD isn't a red flag and not having a web site isn't a red flag. See what the deal is. If there are any items in their contract that you don't like, offer an alternative for consideration. If you're unsure about what's common and what's not, post it here. When making a long journey like driving from Alaska to Key West to ultimately swim in the ocean, don't be afraid to get out of the car.
