CherokeeI found a forest clearing, for my K-Mart tentit came with a plastic mattress, and a fake pine-fresh scentwent back to my SUV, for my Sony tv setand peeking through some pine-cones, was an old arrowheadthen a red moon on the skyline, rose so wild and freeriding from the foothills, like a full-blood CherokeeI touched that noble relic, then left it in the sandcos something that sacred, belonged to the landsame as museum hallways, hang Monets and Renoirsmen should walk haunted mountains, to behold their memoirsI thought how ev'ry nation, is mighty as it grows'fore it fades in Autumn's chill, like a Cherokee rosebut tasting that bit of hist'ry, with my fingers and thumbtaught me in time's endless banquet, I am but a crumbso I prayed and slept outdoors, 'neath the distant Pleiadescos I'd almost made comforts, my only deitiesI thought of how we'd honored, a nation so proud and freethen I packed and drove home, in my Jeep Cherokee(c)2006 Robert George
