Hi - thanks for that feedback - good points re the synth & horns. I'm interested that you think the 'spacey' vibe precludes this from being 'classic' - have you listened to the theme from "Ironside" - http://www.moviegrooves.com/m3u/tvtoons ... 43.m3umind you, it's not as 'psychedelic' as mine

Hi Vikki-Oops, I misunderstood you term "classic crime" to mean modern crime shows in the classic crime genre, not older crime shows. That Ironside theme is pretty trippy, no doubt...one of QJ's more "fringe" works. Notice how all the tones are created with organic or acoustic sounds and instruments...I don't hear any synths in there at all.Your piece does evoke a very similar feel to this, although the Ironside piece seems to have a bit more melodic structure to it. Vikki,I think your theme is very idiomatic, it sounds like it fits your vision.Your orchestration makes it feel a bit like a science fiction theme, though.When the horn theme comes in, the midrange drops out and it feels like it loses some of it's impact (this might contribute to the floaty feel some are feeling). You have a filter swept pad underneath the synth horns, I'd keep that going under the "real" horns (this would give it more of a counterpoint feel as Q did in Ironsides). On the last note of the "real" horn line, make it last until the downbeat of the the answer phrase bar and make the "real" horns crescendo and get brighter (CC11 or mod wheel depending on the patch) so they hand off the phrase to the synths in a very powerful manner. A cymbal crash on the downbeat of the answer phrase bar would give it some more drama as well.It's hard to tell from the recording, but that is a synth at the beginning of Ironsides. I used to watch the show (when it was new!) and one of my favorite parts was the intro. I wanted a synth so bad but my folks wouldn't spring the 1500 bucks for a Minimoog, I guess they had other priorities!I also think if you punch up the mix a bit, it'll have more of the crime thing going on.Good work, Vikki!MazzPS: For extra points, what was the instrument that did the bass line in the theme from Sanford and Son (also by Quincy Jones)?.

I'll definitely follow your advice on this - after Christmas I have some time off, and I'll have my Gold Bundle... so I plan to rework several pieces, and this is one of them!
