My opinion, if you're getting a new case and MOBO, you might also want more cores and a 64-bit OS, depending on your workflow and software. I'm kinda up against it, myself; I can't use/upgrade Kontakt, (killing some instrument libraries I paid good money for) and my favorite drum software no longer supports my defunct WinXP OS, but 64-bit drivers aren't available for my legacy Tascam I/O hardware. In my case, and maybe yours, it might be time to buy a new computer.

- so, what exactly do you mean by "cores" ?
- I'm actually running Windows 7 , 64-bit - so that's OK right?

You say getting a "new computer"...but is that pretty much what I'm doing if I'm replacing MOBO, CPU and RAM etc? Or do you mean OS and the whole shooting match?

I would look at upgrading the drives ASAP too - but down the line a bit. Perhaps an SSD etc.

The $99 AMD chip I had spec'ed was a 4 core or Quad core.

The advantage is that it can speed up parallel processes, so it's almost like having 4 cpu's in 1, not really though because if the software either doesn't or can't always use the parallel processing and other effects, it doesn't quite have the power as 4 cpu's.

this is from a Sound on Sound article, "Thanks to hyperthreading, the Core i7 presents itself to applications as eight virtual processing cores. A preferences dialogue lets you set an upper limit to the number of CPU cores Samplitude will use, and defaults to three. Having raised this to eight, I tried to stress it out by running multiple stereo instances of a demanding 64-bit plug-in, in this case, Softube's Classic Channel. The first signs of distress became apparent after the 51st instance..."

I have the Independence sampler, and I know that if I had more than just a dual core processor, I can select other options of running say 2 cores for Independence if I had a quad core processor, etc.

looks good to me. I wanted to make sure the ram was supported and everything was compatible. I don't see any problems. Be sure and keep us updated!

Incidentally, the machine was cruising along nice yesterday. I imagine it was due to me obsessively freezing midi tracks and cutting out any CPU related fat in the rest of the project though!

But I also imagined it might be that the parts know they're going on the scrap-heap soon - "Please! Don't replace us, we'll work harder - we promise!"
