CONTEMPORARY GUITAR and BASS-Driven INDIE POP/ROCK INSTRUMENTAL

Post by jamusix » Thu Jul 09, 2020 8:40 am

Hey all,

I'm working on some tracks to submit for listing # S200711GB, which is asking for "CONTEMPORARY GUITAR and BASS-Driven INDIE POP/ROCK INSTRUMENTALS."

Please listen to the track linked below and shoot me some feedback. Anything is good, but let me know if you have specific suggestions to address the following questions:

- Does this have a contemporary sound? If not, what would you change?
- Are the guitar samples & performance convincing enough?
- If you would select a different instrument for the melody line, what would that be? I struggle with this.
- Does this have enough of a developmental arc?
- Is there anything about the track that jumps out at you as being inherently NOT forwardable?

I've been a TAXI member for almost a year now and this is my first post. I have about 15 forwards to date, but no deals. :( As a full-time father, I have very limited time to commit to TAXI (~2 hours per day or less) so I wanted to see what I could do without the forum; I know what a time sink they can sometimes be. However, I've found that the feedback loop from actual submissions is just too slow. I want to learn more quickly!! :ugeek: :)

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Heya Jeremy, could you post the reference tracks provided in the listing so we could have a benchmark.
Without those, I can tell you that you have an extremely catchy instrumental. I love it

It's a cool, catchy groove but I don't think it sounds like guitar. I have a feeling you're going to have a hard time using guitar samples to get by the screeners on this one.

First, a disclaimer: I listened on a laptop with CR@PPY speakers. I can't really tell about the sounds, but it didn't sound like a guitar to me. Maybe some tweaking of the sound, using a guitar FX chain or reamping or something could sell the guitar... or maybe it needs different sounds, additional expression (finger grease). My laptop is NOT a critical listening environment.

BUT

The groove and 'feel' is definitely in the ballpark of what I consider Indie Pop; I think it's missing the occasional handclap or vocal shout 'hey!' to put it over the top for an arrangement in that genre. So please be encouraged.

In case you're curious, here's the final version I submitted:

...and here's the feedback I received. It was returned, but only just. Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Feedback for "Go Down (feat. Javier Carrasco)"
S200711GB

What I like most about this song:
This has a really great line and all great ideas throughout. I love this sound, and this was very, very close.

I think you could improve this song by:
This is largely good until 1:30 or so. For this particular request, we really needed this to be more guitar driven and less driven by the keyboard (Rhodes/EP/Wurl). The melody is great, but repeated too many times without additional layers or guitar. I think this might have worked if the line was a little more simple and layered with guitar at some point.

I returned or forwarded this song because:
This has such a great sound, but for it to work for this particular request, it really needed more tweaking in a few areas:
1) The lead line is slightly "busy"
2) It needs to be more guitar driven
3) It could be repeated 1 less time

Additional things I noticed...

Style
Mood is off target with the listing request

Composition
Too Repetitive

This is really great, man. The improvements you made were amazing.
If you are planning on submitting for another listing, you should listen carefully to 1:26-1:55. Something happens to the timing and it's almost like the guitar is 1/8 beat behind everything else. Maybe you accidentally moved the wave file over in your DAW? I hope this helps, because this is such a killer track!

Thanks, Jeff! Yeah, I was going for a really open strum behind the beat type thing, but I guess since so many people commented on it, I must have overdone it.
