Converting sheet music to midi?

Post by sethlit » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:00 pm

My wonderful fiance is a singer and operatically trained, so I thought I'd maybe give it a go at the new Opera listing. BUT, I'm not much of a pianist. So, I was curious, does anyone have any experience/advice with converting sheet music to midi? If so, is it accurate and is it legal?

Also...side question. Are there such things as midi libraries that have fully scored orchestral public domain pieces for purchase? Or am I just being lazy?

Thanks guys!

Seth,
I've found MIDI files for classical music (Bach, Mozart, etc) as well as pop and jazz tunes out on the web. A google search search of the composer or title +MIDI should point you in a direction. When I tried "convert sheet music to midi" it returned over 3000 items on google. Happy hunting!

Sibelius will do this for you but that kind of takes the fun out of it.

If you find something that is in this format send it over and I'll send you a MIDI file back. 8-)

Wow! Thanks guys!

jazzstan- My google searching has begun! As far as this specific project goes, my limitation (other than finding the midi) will be finding the right piece. Amanda (my fiance), probably doesn't have time to learn any new arias, so I'm stuck with a small amount of pieces to choose from. It's looking like it's going to Mozart. :D

mikeymike2000- Right on! I might just take you up on that. :D :D I do have Finale (from when I would arrange jazz band charts in my college days) but I haven't really messed with finale's midi conversion much.

The listing seemed to prefer full orchestration as opposed to piano accompaniment. I'd prefer to find a full score. BUT...beggars can't be choosers.

I'll keep the thread posted on what happens...fingers crossed.
