Cubase can't find VST plugins
Hi guys, Wondering if you might be able to sort me out, as you often do!I've installed Goliath and Storm Drums 2 onto my computer but when I open Cubase 5 it doesn't acknowledge them. However, I recently upgraded from Cubase 4 to 5 and I've tried opening Cubase 4 and voila! It sees them all there! But I want to use Cubase 5, obviously. Cubase 5 does not have a VST folder. I copied the VST folder from Cubase 4 and popped it into Cubase 5 but no go. I've sent a ticket to Soundsonline but it's usually 3 days before they respond and they usually send back something really unhelpful, so I was hoping...I'm on PC 64 bit Vista Cubase Essential 5 (4) and Audio Kontrol 1 soundcard. Just as a PS, since I installed the new software, my EWQLSOgold now says it hasn't been registered even though it has been for 18months and when I tried to access the registration website I got a severe warning that it might be a "fake" sight. Nothing but fun fun fun...Georgina

Re: Cubase can't find VST plugins
Hi Georgina!I'll guess it comes down to the folder where you keep your VST files. It's usually in C/Program Files/Steinberg/Cubase/VST Inputs. However, in MY case, mine are in C/Program Files/Steinberg/Cubase Studio 4/VST Inputs. If I opened my old Cubase SX, I wouldn't be able to see any VSTs in the Studio 4 folder. So, I'd go looking in that Program Files area and find out where your Goliath dll files are, and then where all the other ones are. Put a copy of the dll file into the same folder all the other ones are and you might have it nailed.Does that use the PLAY engine? If so, the VST might be called Play instead of Goliath.Hope this helps!

Re: Cubase can't find VST plugins
Georgina, Mike is correct. You should have a folder called "Steinberg", open that and you should find a folder called "VST plugins". As Mike said, you have to have copies of those .dll files of the programs you want to use in here. You should either move them from the cubase4 or copy them and place into the vst plugin folder. It seems no matter how I follow instructions to the letter on my downloaded software, I am always moving files around to get them to work. I don't have ewqslogold, but there is probably a key (picture for registration) that got moved to a different place or something. It is fun isn't it?lol My computer is a mess organizationally, I don't know how it even runs sometimes with files copied and strewn everywhere, one program I have doesn't have the samples in the right location so I have to do a search and after getting them purge and reload everytime I use it, it's now just an extra few steps that's become part of the procedure, because I gave up on figuring where they should be, and they work, lol!!!

Re: Cubase can't find VST plugins
Thanks Mark and Len, Well my Cubase 5 really doesn't have a VST folder. I've looked everywhere. I looked in the manual and it says that it copies any plugins from the older version when you install it (because I bought an upgrade) but it doesn't have the same folder that CB4 has. I've tried copying the folder and dropping it into CB5 but it doesn't "see" it. Mark, yes it does use PLAY, and I can see the play .dll file in CB4. But where to put it if there's no VST plugin folder? Maybe I should reinstall CB5 and it'll copy the VST plugins from CB4 again, with the new software .dll's in place!? Len, I know just what you mean about having to always move files around even if you follow the instructions carefully. I'm thinking that if I can't get this sorted, I'll just have to record with the new software in CB4 and then mix the audio and drop it into CB5 and continue working on it from there. But how silly!Anyway, thanks for your ideas guys. Georgie

LOL!! By the way, I'm sort of wondering why you still have the cb4? It might be best to uninstall cb4, but I guess that depends on whether or not you still have the disks maybe, or why the upgrade didn't take care of that? I know it sometimes causes problems, from experience, lol, long story, whew!!

Hi Georgina,My Cubase is ancient so I don´t know if this helps.Open "Devices" menu --> "Plug-in information".Then set up a (shared) folder where the plug-ins areinstalled. btw. It doesn´t have to be in the Cubase 5 folder. There should be something similar in Cubase 5.HTH- JH

Re: Cubase can't find VST plugins
Hi JH, thanks for your help. I tried what you said, but I couldn't find out how to set up a shared folder. I only JUST pass the "able to cope with the technology" test. I have actually got everything working in Cubase 4 now. (stormDrum, Goliath, EWgold & Gypsy) Ha! So I will hobble along with that. But I was wondering if I should uninstall Cubase 5 and reinstall it because it says it finds the VST plugins when you very first open it. But more of a problem is that my EW gold orchestra is making Cubase 5 crash every time I open it because it thinks it's not registered. I can't get onto the registration site so I've send a message for help! Thanks guys, Georgie

Quote:I tried what you said, but I couldn't find out how to set up a shared folder. So there is "plug-in information" in the devices menu? When you open it, does it have any buttons?Quote:EW gold orchestra is making Cubase 5 crash every time I open it because it thinks it's not registeredThat´s strange if it works in Cubase 4... Re-installing Cubase 5might be a good idea.I hope you get it to work.- JH

Re: Cubase can't find VST plugins
Hi Georgie!I'm running Cubase5, but I'm not at the studio right now, so my ideas *might* be worth a shot.Step 1: Open up Cubase5, and then open a project that you made in Cubase4 with it. Chose a Cubase4 project that had stormdrum, etc, working. See if the Cubase4 file maps out the existing VST applications correctly.Step 2: Using the "search" function of your computer, scan your hard drive for *.dll (my guess is, this will make a very long list!). Scroll through the items found until you recognize a Cubase5 application (sorry...I can't name any right now, as I'm away from the studio...maybe the "StudioEQ" insert, for example). That should tell you where the .dll files are stored for Cubase5, then maybe you can copy in your others. When I get home tonight, I'll find out where Cubase5 installed them on my system, and I'll log into the forum and report the location. I've since added .dll files, so I must be able to find it!
Earplugs may be required for anyone over the age of cool.
