Cubase to Protools

I mixed some songs at an outside studio using Cubase. Now that I'm getting Protools in my studio, I'm wondering how it's going to be if I want to work with songs mixed in Cubase. I'm sure I can import .wav files but can I import mix parameters made in Cubase? I'd like to do some remixes but don't want to start from scratch.Nomi

Nick? Anyone?I'm asking because I want to do remixes and I'd like to keep most of the mixing parameters, the EQ, compression, FX, pan. I just want to change the sequence a little, add and subtract tracks. I'm upgrading my studio to Protools and I'd like to do the remixes at home. But I want to know if it is possible to transfer the mix parameters from Cubase to Protools. I might not want to start from scratch since we put so much into the mix. So if it isn't possible to get the mix parameters into Protools, I'll probably just go back to the studio where we did the mix. That will cost money so I'm trying to find out what my options are.If anyone has experience with this issue, I'd love to hear from you.Nomi

Hey,I hope im not too late.You may export your projects as OMF format project files.OMF does not carry midi info, but keeps the audio clip locations. And if im not wrong, PT imports OMF. (+wave files for sure, if they are in proper folders)I hope it helps. Good luck.

Not too late at all. I was hoping someone would reply. Do OMF files retain mix parameters? Wave files don't. Wave would just save the finished mixdown tracks of course. But the individual tracks wouldn't have the EQ and effects on them if I import Wave. I don't know about OMF files, do you?I know if I reload the project onto Cubase, the mix parameters are recalled exactly as we left them. Does the OMF format translate this to PT?Nomi

nomiyah, it's not all that easy to go between DAWs even with OMFs. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is print linear tracks that go from beginning to end and just import them that way.

The mix parameters are very unlikely to make it intact.

Does the OMF format translate this to PT?Why not keep Cubase on your machine and use that to remix the old songs, and only start new projects in PT?The only way to make sure everything sounds the same is to use Nick's method of printing tracks, but then you don't have the ability to tweak the eq/fx, since they're now "burnt into" the tracks.OMF is unlikely to work perfectly even if you had the exact same plugins in PT (and didn't use any of Cubase's built in eq/fx), which you probably don't (and did).matto

I was afraid that would be the answer. I don't have Cubase. I went to an outside studio and mixed a couple dozen songs in Cubase. I wanted to see if I could do a remix in PT without starting from scratch.It sounds like it won't be feasible, that I should do remixes in the outside studio or start the mix from scratch in PT.I originally did what you mentioned, Nick, using linear tracks to go from my Akai workstation to the Cubase studio.Thanks. It helps to know what I'm up against so I can avoid getting frustrated with an impossible technical challenge.Nomi
