Demo Question
Sorry if this is in the wrong category.Hi, I'm a singer. And I'm just wondering if I buy a non-exclusive beat to put on my demo and let's say a record company is interested, THEY'LL buy the exlclusive of the beat for my project? It this how some people do it? It wud be alot cheaper this way for the artist (me), than to just buy the exclusive now.

Re: Demo Question
It depends on what you're submitting to. A lot of the TAXI listings say No Uncleared Samples, because they don't want to deal with paying for a license. If you're submitting a song demo, with the intention that an artist will recut it, and likely not use your track anyway, you're probably fine. But, if what you're trying to sell is your production, then you should probably own it first to sell it.Why not just make your own beats?

If you mean buying a CD with various drum loops or a virtual instrument like Stylus RMX, then there's no problem as that's what those are designed for... to be used to create tracks of music. Their license sometimes has restrictions but it's usually what you'd expect, that you can't repackage their beats and sell them as your own beats.I hear a lot of music where I recognize a loop or some kind of sound from a virtual instrument that I (and many, many musicians) own.

Re: Demo Question
Quote:Why not just make your own beats? So easy, even a caveman can do it? Oh, you're going to incur the wrath of lots of drummers and percussionists... Speaking for myself, BOOM-BLOCK, BOOM-BLOCK is what I produce as compared to, say, a package of drum loops from Steve Gadd. How am I going to be more "in the pocket", experienced and creative than that guy? imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Demo Question
Quote:Quote:Why not just make your own beats? So easy, even a caveman can do it? Oh, you're going to incur the wrath of lots of drummers and percussionists... Speaking for myself, BOOM-BLOCK, BOOM-BLOCK is what I produce as compared to, say, a package of drum loops from Steve Gadd. How am I going to be more "in the pocket", experienced and creative than that guy? I can't afford Steve for my demos. But, I can program drums that a lot of the music buying public (or clients for that matter) would dig. I love it when drummers will ask me "who played drums?" That said, if a free-use Gadd loop works in your joint, it's gonna groove hard. And BTW, BOOM-BLOCK can groove hard if the rest of your track is "right"!But, I think shavez's original question was more in the hip-hop/pop realm where a "beat" is more than just the acoustic drums. It can include scratching, bass, guitar riffs, orchestra hits, etc. How much are we talkin' to buy those loops? I'm curious. I mean, you know, if you're lookin' for some beats no one else has... I know this guy that can do that sorta thing...

Quote:How much are we talkin' to buy those loops? I'm curious. I mean, you know, if you're lookin' for some beats no one else has... I know this guy that can do that sorta thing... Probably anywhere from $50 to $300-something for anywhere from hundreds to thousands of loops and variations. Stylus RMX (www.spectrasonics.net) is at the upper range in both cases, but it has so much depth and flexibility that it defies the general definition of a "loop" virtual instrument, going way beyond the norm. The customization of something like that in the hands of anyone who can and likes to develop their own beats would truly be an awesome thing. For me, it gives me so many choices, variations, and is such a huge time saver that it lets me concentrate of what I do best which is the music itself. Of course the loop packages like tablas, udus, and other ethnic percussion instruments are indespensible to me as well since I definitely don't have a handle on tabla playing or whatever. BOOM-BLOCK on the tablas definitely doesn't work.

Re: Demo Question
I was going to ask shavez what he meant by beat because I had a feeling it was more than just a drum beat. There seems to be a whole bunch of Hip-Hop sample CDs and construction kits out there at all price ranges. The only issue I can see with these is more of an aesthetic one in that the styles may change so quickly as to make these collections obsolete fairly rapidly. I don't know because I don't keep up with Hip-Hop music.Business-wise, I wonder if a beat maker in Hip Hop is an arranger or could be considered a co-writer? If one didin't have much or any budget, it might be good to find a beat maker that is willing to collaborate for a percentage of any future potential profits as a co-writer.Regarding Stylus, remember that it can import REX files which opens up a whole world outside of the original library and expanders. I've used it with some very good REX collections recently, it just makes it easy to mess around with the grooves and the effects are very good. I don't do much drum programming anymore unless it's a basic electronica beat layered with Stylus, etc. on top or editing already played/programmed loops, MIDI or audio. Until I can afford real Steve (and the room to record him in), Steve in a box will have to do. Mazz

Re: Demo Question
Hi, sorry for not responding sooner. Well I'm a rapper, and I'm trying to pitch myself to a major.I have no knowlegde of beat creation. I'm a lyricist first and foremost. I was looking into buying a beat so I can rap over. But didn't know the differnce exactly between exclusive and non-exclusive.I was told that non-exclusives are fine to put on my demo. What I was trying to say in my first post was - if a label picks me up, will they buy the exclusive off the producer, or produce a new instrumental entirely to my vocals? Is that how it usually works?EDIT: Mazz, I'm practically the sole writer and arranger for my tracks (for the moment at least).EDIT2: Also what I mean when I say beat, I just mean the instrumental track.

I don't know because I don't keep up with Hip-Hop music.Yes, lots of Hip-Hop/Rap sample CD's available to create the underlying "beat" (drums, percussion, music, etc). Since these are used for what you're wanting to use them for and are sold in mass quantities, there never will be an "exclusive" purchase of these since they've already sold thousands of copies before any of us discover them and pick them up. Since they're designed to be used to create the underlying bed of music/rhythms, there aren't any "uncleared sample" issues and you're free to use them as you wish, only within the restrictions of the license for that particular package. Mostly those restrictions have to do with repackaging and reselling.Throw "hip hop sample cd" into a Google search and you'll get a ton of examples of what we're talking about. Seeing/hearing those might answer some questions that we haven't answered or clear up some answers that we've muddied up in some way.
