Digital Distribution

Post by dabresk » Tue Feb 12, 2008 2:56 pm

This is not exactly Taxi related, but kind of. The reason I joined Taxi was because I had a CD manufactured and sold by CD Baby. Well, that was about a year ago. I sold a little more than 100 locally (that's one-sixth of the population of my town...). I sold a few on CD Baby. But then I had a surprise. I got an email yesterday showing a deposit to my bank account from CD Baby for a decent amount from digital distribution (iTunes, Napster etc). They put your music on 42 different sites. I get a few cents here and there for PLAYS and much more for downloads. I knew about this going in, but did not figure that I would get much off of it. I get more via digital than selling CD's.I guess the point I am making is, that it all adds up, and it's nice to be rewarded for your music. I just could not believe how many sales I had through iTunes and Napster.By the way, the CD is "Paradise Moon" (uh...plug...plug).Just made me happy and I had to tell someone. It's really a good idea to get your stuff out there, cause you never know who or when it will be purchased. Web presence is extremely important...and a good example of this is Jamie Southworth (jameii on the Taxi boards). She's got great stuff, and she is building a web presence..do a google on her and her name is number one. She's on myspace, linkedin, etc.Her success on Taxi (the "First Artist" forward) is not only attributed to her amazing talent, but also the fact that she has herself plastered all over the internet (I believe that was part of the deal she got the forward on - "strong web presence"). Not to mention her compassion (the Kid Finders Network), and well....just being blessed from above.Uh...I guess the above would be a plug for Jamie now that I think of it.I've made my money back on my CD project, so I am happy. And because of CD Baby, I joined Taxi and met all of the wonderful people here. And I am convinced that I will get a deal via Taxi in the future. The cup's always half full here!Bresky

very cool.....that's a great progression of events for a CD... Was all this digital distribution? I'm looking at a similar thing, hooked up through a Taxi listing, and I'm not sure if I should sign up for just digital....what do you think?...have you been doing this without an actual CD....just curious....great news....I'm sure your music will find a home in the listings around here.....good luck,Vicky

Well, three of the songs from the CD were forwarded, so that's good. If I were to do it over again, I would go straight digital. I think the days of the CD are quite numbered, with iTunes etc. Most folks just download now. I still have about 100 CD's to get rid of, and in my part of the world, that will be tough. The CD is available on CD Baby, I just get more digital sales. I have a link to iTunes on my website, and that seemed to generate a good portion of the sales.http://www.bresky.comBresky
